Review of Bounty paper towel-one sheet challenge

by Elizabeth on June 11, 2007

I LOVE paper towel. No, seriously, LOVE it. So I was excited when I received a roll of Bounty select-a-size in the mail as part of the Bounty One Sheet Challenge. Bounty has been improved to be better than ever, and they want to hear how just one sheet stood up to the toughest household tasks.

Boy, do I have a story to tell about that! Because I received the select-a-size roll, I used the equivalent of one regular full-sized sheet, which is two of the smaller single select-a-size sheets. I took everything off of my kitchen counter, sprayed it lightly with antibacterial spray, and wiped it down with the Bounty. Then I lightly dampened the paper towel and wiped the counter again. Gee, said the paper towel to me, is that the best you’ve got? I’m barely even wrinkled here!

Okay then, paper towel, you need something tougher to clean? Fine. Let’s clean the inside of the microwave! One of the best features of Bounty paper towel is the wring and reuse-you can rinse it out, wring out the water, and shake it open and reuse it multiple times. So I did that, and then I microwaved a glass measuring cup of water for three minutes to loosen the dried-on gunk on the inside of the microwave. This is going to be a tough one!

Here’s a great tip: after microwaving the water to steam the inside of the microwave and help loosen dried-on food, let the water cool slightly and then use it to dip the paper towel in as you clean. Why waste all that great hot water? I folded the paper towel into a smaller square, dipped it carefully into the hot water, and then began wiping the top sides, and bottom of the microwave. When one side got too soiled, I re-folded the square to a clean side, continuing to dip in the water. When the towel got too wet, I rinsed it and wrung it out and kept cleaning. Alas, the two smaller sheets finally separated, but my microwave was sparkling clean!

I carefully rinsed out each half-sheet, wrung them out, and then spread them out on the counter. They still looked fine, so what else could I use them to clean? A-ha, the toaster! It sits next to the stove and gets splattered with all kinds of gunk, let’s clean that! I lightly sprayed one of the sheets with a spray cleaner and set to wiping the outside of the toaster. I also used the paper towel to wipe off the crumb trays underneath, and to clean the dials on the front. At that point, my hard-working little half-sheet started to separate, and it was time for it to be laid to rest.

I picked up the second half-sheet, dampened it, put on a drop of dish soap, and used it to wipe down the top of my glass cooktop stove, and then wiped the front of the oven and all of the dials. I rinsed, wrung out, and then cleaned the top of the range hood, which was both dusty and greasy-ewww! By the time I finished wiping down the backsplash, the paper towel sheet was starting to come apart. But what a champ! Tackling that whole big stove all by itself! In the following photo, the half-sheet on the left cleaned the whole stove, and the half-sheet on the right scrubbed my toaster clean.

You’ll notice that although the halves are separating, neither one of them looks particularly dirty. The food and grease stains kept rinsing right out! If the sheets hadn’t started to separate after all that cleaning, I could have kept going! Let’s recap:

ONE sheet of select-a-size new and improved Bounty paper towel, made up of two smaller halves, which cleaned:

1. My whole kitchen countertop
2. The inside of a filthy microwave (seriously, I need to start covering those plates of leftover spaghetti before I heat them up!)
3. The toaster which sits next to the stove
4. The top of a very dirty glass cooktop stove, the front of the oven, all the knobs, and the range hood.

There is no way that any sheet of cheap, store-brand paper towel could have performed like that! I put that sheet of paper towel through the wringer, and it performed way beyond my expectations. And the One Sheet Challenge got me to clean my kitchen, which is always a good thing, and it was FUN! Next time, look out Bounty, we’re cleaning…the bathroom.

Hi Elizabeth,
Wow that was interesting and informative. I will have to try the one sheet challenge myself.

I Was wondering if you had heard about my Soda-Club contest. Might be something you would want to enter. I added the link to it on my name.

This was a great review Elizabeth! I love Bounty paper towels because you can pick your size. It is the price that gets me though when I go shopping and I usually end up picking up a no-name brand.

Trish- I know what you mean, when your budget is really tight, spending $1.50 on the store brand seems better than spending $5.00 on Bounty. But this one roll has lasted me for so long because I rinse out the sheets that aren’t that dirty, let them dry over the sink, and use them again! So it’s worth the money, to me!
