Please help me walk for a cure for Alzheimer’s.

by Elizabeth on August 11, 2007

Edited to add: Check the bottom of the post for donation updates!

I haven’t walked 3 miles all at once in a really long time, but I’m going to participate in a 5K walk next month, and I am asking for your help. On September 16th, the Michigan State University campus will hold the annual Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk, which is the largest event in the nation that raises funds and awareness for Alzheimer care, support and research. I am going to participate by walking 5K, and I am asking for pledges to donate to Alzheimer’s research.

There are currently more than 4.5 Million Americans who suffer from Alzheimer’s, a debilitating disease that at first, affects memory and mood, then progresses into horrible suffering, where the person is no longer able to chew, or swallow, or control their bladder or bowels. They might even forget how to breathe. I can’t imagine how both the person affected and their family must suffer.

There is no cure for Alzheimer’s disease right now. There are drugs that can halt the progression of the symptoms, and the more funds that can be raised for research, the better the drugs will get. Eventually a cure might be found. Those of us who are lucky to have good health can help by participating in events such as the Memory Walk, and by taking pledges which will be donated to research. Walks are taking place all over the country, and you can sign up now by visiting the Alzheimer’s Association website and searching for a walk in your area. You can also sign up to be a Team Captain and encourage your friends to walk with you.

I have created my own page on the Alzheimer’s Association site, and if you would please click this link to go to my page, you will find more information about Memory Walks, a link for registering to participate in a Walk in your area, and my donation page. My goal is to raise $200.00 by September 16th. Any amount that you can give would be gratefully accepted and appreciated. I’ll be updating my progress as I train for the walk (hey, I’m out of shape, you know. I have to work up to walking 5 kilometers), and I’ll also update as the donations come in.

Thank you in advance for reading this post. Whether you donate to my Walk or join one in your area, I am proud to be raising money for this important Charitable Cause. Let’s help raise awareness and money for Alzheimer’s together.

Donation Updates:

Thank you so much to my PayPerPost friend Leigh, from The Inconvenient Truth, for making the first donation to my Memory Walk!

Thank you so much to my PayPerPost friend Drew, from The BenSpark Blog, for making a donation to my Memory Walk!

I commend you for doing something for such an important cause. I’ve done a lot of biking on behalf of MS and Parkinson’s, which I’ve had family members and friends with both. You can do it!

Perhaps this is not the best post to write this but you did mention that I should go to your most recent post ;) So, here I am. I just wanted to let you know that I love your write up about yourself “The 100 things About Me”. So far, it’s the best intro I’ve read. Humourous yet truthful, I truly enjoyed it :)

Shea- Thank you. A 5K really isn’t that long of a walk, maybe an hour depending on how slowly the crowd moves, and the M.S.U. campus is really beautiful in September. I just hope I can raise the $200.00 I set as my goal. Did you pledge? :)

IMMomsDaughter- Thank you for coming to MomReviews, I’m glad you enjoyed reading my 100 Things About Me! I hope you will come back to read my review of a new James Patterson book, and to keep up with my updates on my fundraiser for Alzheimer’s disease research. Did you pledge? :)

I appreciate your comment, however, did you not read the comment field before posting? It clearly says do NOT LEAVE YOUR SEO instead of a real name. Your mother named you “Great boys”????? Your comment has been deleted and your IP has been banned.
