Yoplait Go-Gurt Fizzix fizzles upon review

Yoplait has introduced a new carbonated yogurt in a tube, have you seen it? It’s called Go-Gurt Fizzix, and it is really…different. My boys LOVE yogurt, and Go-Gurt is convenient for tossing into their lunchboxes or for a grab-and-go snack. They can eat boxes of it every week, so when I was contacted about reviewing this new kind of Go-Gurt, I enthusiastically said yes!

I received eight boxes, that’s right, boxes, 64 tubes in all, of Yoplait’s new Go-Gurt Fizzix, the “Fizzy Yogurt Snack”. This is how Yoplait describes it on their product site:

img_fizzix1.gif
Go-Gurt Fizzix™ is a new yogurt snack that mixes the wholesome goodness of Yoplait yogurt with a blast of carbonation for a fizzy taste that your kids will love. It’s a new fizzy sensation with cool new flavors like Blue Raspberry Rage and Strawberry Watermelon Rush. Even better, Fizzix has the same great nutrition as Yoplait Go-Gurt.

As snacks go, a 2.25 oz. tube of Go-Gurt is not a bad choice, nutritionally speaking. Each tube has 80 calories, 2 grams of fat, 11 grams of sugar, 2 grams of protein, and it’s fortified with a few vitamins. Many kids don’t like to drink milk, and a Go-Gurt provides 10% of the daily requirement for calcium. Go-Gurt Fizzix comes in Blue Raspberry Rage/ Strawberry Watermelon Rush, Wild Cherry Zing/ Strawberry Lemonade Jolt, and Triple Berry Fusion/ Fruit Punch Charge.

But how does it taste? Well. Um. In the words of every member of my family? “Weird”. I gave tubes to both the boys, my husband, and my daughter, and told them it was a new kind of yogurt that was fizzy, you know, like Pop-Rocks? And that’s what I thought the taste would be, like taking a bite of yogurt and then pouring some Pop-Rocks in your mouth. That sounds fun, right?

Go-Gurt Fizzix does not taste like regular yogurt mixed with Pop-Rocks. The descriptions from the boys and Chris, who had to be coaxed to take a second taste for the sake of the review, were that it “leaves a weird feeling in my mouth”, and “oh, that is not good”, and “can we have some regular yogurt?” Kaitlyn, seeing what we were doing, of course wanted to try it for herself, so I guided the end of the yogurt tube into her mouth and squeezed so she could taste it, and she made a face and shook her head saying “no no no”.

It’s not the flavor of the yogurt itself, in fact, I thought the Strawberry Watermelon was pretty tasty, if it had just been regular yogurt. I squeezed the contents of one of the tubes into a cereal bowl so I could get a closer look. You know when you make pancake batter and you let it sit on the counter for a few minutes, and little air bubbles appear in the batter? That’s what the yogurt looked like, it had little air bubbles all through it. I tried stirring it with a spoon to stir all the air out, thinking that would make it regular yogurt, right?

No. Whatever process is used to put the carbonation in the yogurt, it changes the taste of the yogurt itself. Even with all the air stirred out, the “mouth feel” (a fancy term I learned from the Food Network) of the yogurt was odd. The best way I can think to describe it is it made my mouth feel vaguely dried out. Not one single tube was finished, in fact, they were all discarded after two small tastes.

And now I have six and a half boxes of this yogurt in my fridge and freezer, and no idea what to do with them. The Food Bank only takes perishable food from reputable companies like grocery stores, but I feel guilty just throwing it away! I gave one box to the next door neighbors thinking maybe they will like it, but I haven’t heard back which makes me wonder if they are trying to figure out how to ask me NOT to share any more food samples with them if it’s going to be weird fizzy yogurt.

Sorry, Yoplait. You asked for an honest review, and this is it. Please go back to making regular Go-Gurt. Here’s an idea-could you PLEASE consider making Go-Gurt in Vanilla? I know kids are supposed to like flavors like Cotton Candy, but my kids like Vanilla yogurt, and it would be great to be able to put a tube of it in their lunchbox. If you do, please send me a box (or eight) for a review!

    Great review! Thanks!
Sebastian loves Go-gurts, so now when he sees these in the store and whines for them, I can no, they taste like shit.
    “How do you know mom?”
Cuz E fed them to all her kids and her hubby, and they all pretty much gagged. That’s why, no go grab some regular yogurt or the other go-gurts.

Seriously, when not even Kaitlyn would eat it, I knew it was going to be a NO. I do have a box in the freezer, I should have the kids eat those like a popsicle and see if they taste any better.

Otherwise, your kids can trust MomReviews for their yogurt needs :)

PLease please please, don’t me put off by this. I know it sounds weird, but I love this stuff! I am a bit partial because my dad is the inventor, but I love it. My son is absolutley CRAZY about this stuff. I think if you don’t know what to expect, then it could be a bit off-putting. But after the first shock, give it a second try. I think that the carbonation actually makes the yogurt taste a little more fresh. I love it and I really hope that you guys will give it a shot for yourself. I appreciate that some people won’t like it, but I know tons of people who love it that aren’t related to the inventor!

Charlotte-Believe me, I wanted to like it, I really did. We tried two different flavors, we tried it in the tube and in a bowl, and it’s just not for us. But good luck to your Dad.

Hi. I just wanted to say that I love this stuff. My husband and I hide them from the kids and snack on them ourselves. After the kids are in bed of course. For the record, my daughers and my son love them too (ages 2-6). I didn’t tell them that they weren’t “normal” yogurt before they tasted them though, as I think kids sometimes decide before they try that they don’t like something and then it’s a head game. Maybe the reviewer shouldn’t have told her kids it was different, and just let them taste it without the prior notion that it was weird. Also my neighbor loved them as well and she is 37. We agree that they taste almost like a wine cooler. A slightly alcoholic flavor, I guess, so maybe it’s a good thing if your kids don’t enjoy them!! More for me.
