Kajeet cell phone for kids-a great phone!

by Elizabeth on September 14, 2007

My oldest son is in the fifth grade this year, and in our school district, fifth and sixth grades are together in Intermediate School. Which meant that my preshus baby was going to have to ride the bus to school for the first time, and while he had no problem with it, I had visions in my head of him missing the bus home and standing in front of the school waiting all alone, unable to contact me. Sniff! I started paying attention to ads in magazines for Kid-friendly cell phones, and then to my surprise, I got an email asking if I would like to do a review of the Kajeet phone. What amazing timing!

When the box came, I sat down with my son to look at it, and right away I thought what a cool-looking phone! It’s a Sanyo Katana, which retails for $99.99, and if you are familiar with the Motorola Razr, that’s the same size, shape, and thickness of this phone. It has a bright display and easy-to-identify buttons, and it was super-easy to set up. The instruction guide gave clear directions on getting the phone activated, and we got $5.00 in the phone’s account at activation.

This is a pay-as-you-go phone, so you won’t get any surprises when the bill comes. Parents can set up a budget on kajeet for items like downloading wallpapers, games, and ringtones, and there is also a co-budget that allows the child to help pay for extras. What a great way to teach kids that phones and the extras cost money!

The Kajeet phone also comes loaded with features that today’s kids will come to expect-a digital zoom camera equipped with picture effects, a speakerphone, Bluetooth capability for hands-free use plus a set of headphones, and cool stickers for personalization. Setting up voicemail is easy using the Configurator, and accessing the menus is done through the Navigator. My almost-11 year old son had no problem figuring out how to send and receive a text message, how to pick a new ringtone (Green Day’s American Idiot, which cost him $2.49 from his account), and how to add phone numbers to the contact list.

Ryan’s Review-It’s a great phone for kids. It’s easy to use. It’s good that it can be set to not ring during certain times because we can’t have our phones on during school. I’ve played a few of the games and they are fun.

So there you have it, the MomReviews team gives two big thumbs-up to the Kajeet pay-as-you-go cell phone for kids!

Nice phone to be giving your kid. Wish they had one here in Asia where it’s affordable and simple. Would really be nice to be connected to our children, especially when they’re out most of the time!

Yeah, I know what you mean, Donald T. I gave my son a cheap nokia phone to keep in contact with him when he is going to and from school, but it just doesn’t work the way I like and he ends up texting and calling his friends all the time, and I pay the bill!

:)
