hey Honey, can you turn it down?

I love my husband you know. We have been together since 1985, and we are practically one person now. We agree on almost everything except one thing-what the volume setting should be on the TV at night. I think it should be just loud enough to hear but not so loud that it wakes up the kids, or the neighbors, or the President (well…) My husband, on the other hand, thinks it should be loud enough to hear every word, sound, background noise, if someone whispers, he wants to hear it like it was right in his ear.

The problem is, people who program TV shows have one volume for the show, and one volume for the commercials. Actually, two volumes for the show, because action sequences are always much louder than dialogue sequences. So for us to watch anything together requires him to keep the remote in his hand pointed at the TV, so that I can say “too loud! turn it down! Can you turn it up a little? Too loud!” I keep trying to convince him that we should just turn on the closed captioning so I can read the subtitles while my ears are safely protected with those headsets worn by air traffic controllers. Would that be so wrong?

I agree. When watching movies, I make sure I have the remote control as action sequences are really louder than dialogues. The use of subtitles actually help, especially when I am watching them late at night and I don’t want to disturb the neighbors.

Yen-Exactly! My husband loves it when I go out grocery shopping at night so he can watch a movie with the sound up as loud as he wants :) Thanks for the comment, stop by MomReviews again!

This sounds like the same thing that takes place in our family room every night!

Me and my boyfriend have that same exact problem!! I keep telling him, “There is a volume that is just right and a volume that is just loud enough to hurt… right now it’s set at the latter.”

He looks at me grumbles and turns it down, lol. He started giving me the remote and told me to change it and usually when I’m in control he doesn’t have a problem with it being too loud or too soft.

My husband has used close captioning when I was ready to go to sleep and he was watching the end of a show. It’s great!
We used close captioning a lot while our daughter was in high school. One of her best friends was deaf. We were used to having a bunch of teenagers come over to watch a movie at our house, something I really missed when our daughter went off to college. I think close captioning is awesome for the deaf community, for the elderly who can’t hear well, and for us wives who like things quieter! :)

I think it is unfair for TV shows to have separate volume for actual shows and for commercials. I would love to have a feature built-in TV that would let us use so called “normalized” volume. I know that we have that on our home theater but it works only for DVDs not tv.

First of all, my wife DOES make me turn on the closed captioning for her comfort…

Secondly, my wife has a VERY keen ear…and her rule when I watch TV in bed is that it can’t be any louder than 12…and she can tell!!! She’ll wake up and say…is the volume at 13? Reluctantly…I will say yes and turn it down to 12. lol

    Found you though Blogrush :)

Bradley-That is hilarious! Even worse now, it’s been really really hot the last few days, and our central air conditioning broke, so it’s been 85 degrees in our living room. My husband turns all these fans on full blast, then he has the TV volume set to STUN. I’ve been gritting my teeth a lot lately :)

LOVE BlogRush, like, LOVE it. I’m so glad you found me through it! Stop by again some time!

I’m laughing at this post. However its the other way around with us! I want to hear the tv. i need to hear what is being said. However if I put it up just enough so I can hear it but still not wake up the kids hubby yells that its too loud for him!
our tv is a *gasp* 13 inch tv for our room so closed captioning is really hard to read. i solved this by moving the tv closer to my side of the bed.
