The whole purpose of creating MomReviews was to have a place where I could post my reviews of products, and while I know we aren’t “supposed” to blog for comments, the fact is, I like comments. I hope that in the writing of my reviews, I inspire someone to leave a comment giving their opinion about the product, or asking a question about it, or something. There is a whole community of review bloggers, just like there are Mommybloggers, and food bloggers, and tech bloggers, and it’s a community I want to be a part of.
But. 9 out of 10 comments I get on my posts here are spam. People leave comments that seem legitimate, but their “name” is a website. They are adding absolutely nothing to the discussion. Sometimes their comment does add to the discussion, but I am giving their website a “free” plug by allowing their URL to remain as their name. For example, I got this comment on my post about watching Journeyman:
Christian Apologetics Ministries at Sntjohnny.com » Blog Archive » NBC’s Heroes and a Christian Response … a warm up.
[…] personally, I’m starting to think Heroes is getting tapped out. I am enjoying Journeyman because it is dealing with some of these issues in a more respectable way. Just my opinion. […]
What the heck is that? Did his mother name him that on purpose? I don’t know if I should delete the comment or just go into the Comment Manager and change the name to “Bob” or something.
And, worst of all, I’ve been getting entire posts scraped by sploggers. Which doesn’t happen on Table for Five, I don’t know what it is about this blog in particular that attracts them. But the only thing I can think of is to deactivate the Do Follow plugin and hope that they go away. Even when the posts are credited to me, it’s still someone using my content on their site, and I hate it.
So effective immediately, all comments that don’t come from a person using a first name and not a URL will be deleted. Is there a way to edit my comment field so it says that?
What a pain in the butt.

Actually there is, go into your comment template and add whatever you want to it. I always turn off my trackbacks so I don’t get any of that and I read each and every comment that comes in whether I reply to it or not to do the exact same thing because spammers are evil.
Blueyes-I turned off pingbacks and trackbacks. If people link to me in a post, I’ll see it in my Dashboard anyway. And I added a few lines to the comment area as well. I just want to encourage real comments from real people!
Yeah, the spam comments (maybe we should call them spomments!) can be a royal PITA. Unfortunately, I’ve had to go to a system that nobody except for the administrators can have a comment go through without someone approving it. If these folks that are desperate for links would put half as much effort into creating compelling content the internet would be a far better place. Keep up the good work, and don’t get quagmired in the “spomments.”
I’ve been thinking about it too. For the most part not too much spam YET for mine. But, it’s getting there.
Thanks for nice information.
Great article! Thank you!
