Stephen King’s THE MIST

I have read every single novel and short story collection written by Stephen King. I’ve also seen all of the movies that have been made based on his stories, and some have been fantastic, and some have just been okay. Based on what I have seen from the trailers, The Mist by Stephen King, which is coming out November 21st, looks like it is going to be exactly what a Stephen King movie should be-creepy, spooky, a little scary-in other words, my kind of movie exactly!
“The Mist” is a novella that King first had published in a horror anthology in 1980, and then a lightly re-edited version appeared in 1985’s collection called “The Skeleton Crew”. The story’s narrator and main character is David Drayton, who becomes trapped in a supermarket along with his five year old son Billy and other townspeople, when a mist completely envelopes the town the day after a violent thunderstorm. While trapped, the characters realize that there are creatures outside in the mist, and the terror they feel turns internal as they begin to question what is happening and what they should do about it.
King based the story on a real-life event. The town in which he lived before starting to write the story also became covered in mist after a thunderstorm, and while he and his son were at the supermarket, he imagined a large prehistoric bird flying through the store. By the time he reached the checkout counter, King had the idea for the story.
I have never experienced anything like the events of The Mist, but in college I once had to drive my car in a blinding snowstorm. Blinding, as in, I could not see anything, at all. I followed a semi-truck down the highway I was on until the highway split and he went the other way, and then I just drove very, very slowly while feeling completely terrified. That happened eleven years ago, and I can still remember exactly what it felt like. I became a much more cautious driver after that-it was dumb of me to even be driving in those conditions.
So anyway, if you are a Stephen King fan, mark your calendar for November 21st and the release of the movie version of “The Mist”. It’s rated “R” though, so leave the kiddos at home.
