Ever since I participated in the Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk this summer, I’ve learned so much about not only the disease itself, but about how important it is that the people who care for someone with Alzheimer’s receive the best possible training and support. The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America and it’s member organizations offer education and hands-on services that can improve quality of life for individuals with the disease and their families. With the holidays coming up, purchasing a holiday gift from the AFA estore can show someone caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s that they are important, too.

The AFA estore carries an exclusive line of fine jewelry called Hearts of Care jewelry, and proceeds from the sale of these products support the programs and services of the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America and its member organizations. This unique collection consists of a matching necklace, bracelet, and pin, made of non-tarnishing sterling silver. The necklaces come in both 16 and 18 inch lengths, the bracelet is a 7 1/4 inch braided leather band with a 3/4 inch diameter sterling silver pendant charm, and the lapel pin is a 3/4 inch diameter sterling silver pendant.

The site also carries a Four-Part DVD training program for both family and professional caregivers, titled “Your Time to Care: Basic Skills for Caring for Individuals with Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias at Home”. The step-by-step program is produced by the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America and is designed to help family and professional caregivers provide hands-on care in the home.

Five million people in our country have Alzheimer’s Disease. A purchase from, or a donation to, the AFA provides much-needed funds that are used for education, research, and outreach. The holidays are the perfect time to make a charitable contribution to this important cause.

My grandmother developed it when I was a teen ager. Its truly a horrible disease. There is a study being done in India right now. They don’t get it there. They think it may be because of the high amount of spices in their foods.

Charles-Really? There is no Alzheimer’s Disease in India? I didn’t know that! I hope that the study you referred to can shed some light on ways that we can defeat this horrible disease here in this country.
