Seriously, is Kohl’s ever NOT having a sale?

by Elizabeth on December 9, 2007

Ryan and I went to Kohl’s today to look for pants for him to wear to his Orchestra concert. We had already tried Penney’s, but they only had jeans and khaki cargo pants, and he needs black pants that aren’t jeans.

Not only did Kohl’s have the pants, but the ones I bought were 25% off AND Buy One Get One Free! So Ryan got black and khaki cotton twill pants, for $19.99 TOTAL. What a deal.

But just try to find something at Kohl’s that ISN’T on sale. What is up with that? Every rack was anywhere from 25 to 70% off, which makes me wonder, aren’t they just putting a really high price on the price tag, then “marking it down” to what they actually want to sell it for?

Marking up to mark down is exactly what they do. I’ve caught them several times, especially this time of year.
I refuse to go there now because I think this is just an awful practice (I’ve recently caught JoAnn Fabrics now doing the same thing too!)

I used to work at Kohl’s, and once or twice we got a look at actual cost on some items. I can’t remember the exact percentage, but it was a major mark-up. And, to answer you question, yes, there really are times when things are not on sale. I remember checking a lady out once. She was buying jeans, one of those big mark-up items, and they were not on sale. When I told her that they didn’t ring up on sale (It’s better to do that than have a customer mad when they find out later that they did not get a sale price) she said yes, she knew that. She wanted them and bought them anyway. Those of us who worked there were completely flabbergasted. You mean there are people who actually pay full price? What is wrong with them, anyway?

I know about the boys and the black pants. We always need them, and he is always growing out of them.

Aww man, and here I thought I was getting some deals there. It is the only place I shop now since they shut down the K-Mart and I despise Wal-Mart and Target has crap. Now I am going to have to look even more carefully at what I am buying there.

BTW I like the comment remark I may have to try that too.

Carla-It would be interesting to find similar items at another store and see what the difference is in the “original” price. I have a Thrift Store budget when it comes to clothes, but sometimes I have to buy things new, like the pants, and it’s hard enough spending $10.00 for me!

Anna-I suppose I did exaggerate slightly-not EVERYTHING is on sale there, but pretty darn close! They also had some specials in the toy department that I hadn’t seen anywhere else, like Little People playsets that came with extra accessories. I could have done all of my Christmas shopping there, which is what I’m sure they are hoping for!

And if you need black pants, Sonoma pants were marked down and BOGO! lol

Blueyes-I still like Kohl’s, I just know now that if I wait another week, it will get “marked down” even further. Our Target has Isaac Mizrahi clothes that are meant to fit supermodels, and Junior sizes. So the only clothing I can buy there is socks, underwear, and pajamas :)

I have fun with that comment policy-people leave comments and for their name, they put in their website name, so I make up a name for them, and delete their URL. They never come back and complain, either-lol

There is always a markup on everything in every store. I have learned to not buy it unless it is on sale at Kohls. Here, Kohls tends to be cheapest.

I go to Kohl’s at least once a week. Not that I buy something every time, but they can have some really good deals. We actually bought a food dehydrator because it was only $20.00. We figured we could figure out someone to give it to.
