This just goes to show how much I love Parent Bloggers Network, because they asked for reviewers for a Barney DVD, and I volunteered! I am never going to love Barney, but both of my boys enjoyed watching it occasionally when they were toddlers, and I’m always looking for something Kaitlyn will watch that isn’t Dora or the WonderPets.

Here’s the thing about Barney-he is annoying as all get-out, and the kids always seem to be so stage managed to me, as if their parents are just off camera glaring at them and mouthing the words to the songs. But I have to admit, it’s educational. *sigh* And it uses songs with familiar tunes, that are catchy and informative. As much as I may hate to admit it, Barney got my daughter to clap and march and point to the animals on the screen-to interact rather than just passively watch.

Barney: Animal ABCs takes Barney, Baby Bop, BJ, a character named Riff, and the children out of the familiar school playground and out into other settings, and also has musical scenes with parents dancing along with the kids. Your kids will like the songs and the scenes with live animals.

BUT, best of all-there’s an animal for each letter of the alphabet, and the letters come from Alphabet blocks that the kids find around the classroom. After we watched, Kaitlyn ran and got an Alphabet block out of her room, held it up to me and said “this block has the letter, um, what letter?” “V”, I said. “V is for Vulture”. “Vaw-ter”, she said before running off.

Holy crap, BARNEY TAUGHT MY KID SOMETHING. And that is good enough for me to put aside my dislike of it and accept that it has educational value. Darn it.
