Actor and comedian Robert Cait released a DVD called Kosher/ Not Kosher, with two stand-up comedy sets. One, the Kosher routine, was filmed in front of a religious audience, with Cait using (what I assume are) Hebrew words in the routine (fortunately there are subtitles). The Not Kosher routine was filmed at the Hollywood Laugh Factory. Some of the bits are the same in both routines, but there are huge differences otherwise.
The Kosher routine is about Jewish life, with the most amusing routine to me being the “Are They Jewish Tango”, in which Cait acts out what a Jewish couple thinks when they meet another couple for the first time and aren’t sure if they are Jewish as well. To be honest, I didn’t really get a lot of the jokes, including an entire segment about something called “Chabad”, with absolutely no explanation to non-Jewish viewers as to what that is. I had to Google it to find out that it’s an organization that helps Jews understand their faith and it’s beliefs and traditions.
The Not Kosher portion of the DVD, however, was so completely different from the Kosher part that it was hard to believe it was the same comedian, except for the fact that some of the bits were identical, word for word. But this routine is just plain dirty. I was glad that my kids weren’t even AWAKE let alone anywhere near where they could have heard the television. I don’t consider myself a prude, but as a parent, I can not recommend you let children of any age listen to the Not Kosher routine.
Subject matter included Cait’s past as a sex addict with reference to threesomes, discussion of his having sex with his therapist, orgasms, erections- see what I mean? Even a touching bit about taking his son to preschool on the first day ended with a “joke” about the preschool teacher giving him the finger. I was like, HUH?
I guess in conclusion what I can say is, if you are looking for a comedy DVD that conforms to Jewish religious beliefs, watch the first part of Kosher/Not Kosher. If you like your comedy extremely raw, watch the second part. The DVD is available on Amazon.com.
