A new survey from Ronzoni® Smart Taste™ finds that more than half of moms of kids aged 3-12 find it challenging to feed healthy foods to their kids. Parents say taste (32%) by far is biggest reason why. Looks (10%) and texture (9%) follow as next biggest reasons. The top three “yuck factor” foods of kids (aged 3-12) out there are sardines (63%), liver (59%) and beets (50%). Close runners up are Brussels sprouts (49%) and okra (48%). Despite the nutrient packed punch these foods deliver, kids everywhere are wrinkling their noses at the plates before them.

Check out one mom’s story of the great lengths she goes to in order to get her kids to eat healthy, and how she solves the dinner dilemma. We think you can relate!

In the summertime, I put grated zucchini in EVERYTHING – chili, spaghetti sauce, lasagna, soup, stews – anything where it’s not readily identifiable! I also leave fruit out on the table and leave the junk in the cabinets. It’s easier to grab the fruit so that’s what they eat.

Over all I have never had too much of a problem with my kids, but I will dice up certain vegetables that aren’t a big hit and put them in spaghetti sauce or add them in when I’m making a soup. They really haven’t ever noticed or caught on. It did take a while when I switched from white bread to wheat/different grains bread. I wasn’t too popular then, but everyone eventually adjusted.

I don’t eat those those “yuck factor” foods. I’m certainly not going to require my kids to eat them. But I do include carrots, onions, celery, green peppers & lentils in the ground beef I use for tacos, spaghetti, etc. I also usually keep pureed food that’s been frozen in ice cube trays in the freezer to use in sauces & soups such as cauliflower, spinach, carrots, sweet potatoes, etc. I will also often shred a head of cabbage, flash freeze it, then I’ll chop up a handful to use in stir frys, soups, or anything I use onions in. You can’t taste the small amount that’s used & it looks a lot like onion. These may be small things, but I feel it’s the best I can do for myself & my family right now.

I have been pretty lucky with my kids as they enjoy many fruits and veggies. However, they are kind of stuck in the rut now and afraid to try new things. So of course, I use the standard “You won’t get anything else” technique my parents used, and that sometimes works to get them to eat it but not to like it! I have found letting them prepare their own food (as much as possible). When they get to choose how their corn is made, they seem to like it much more!

    Thank you for the chance!
