Tribe Hummus-the natural, kid-friendly snack!

by Elizabeth on January 25, 2010

My boys are 13 and 11, and when they come home from school, they are STARVING. You would think they hadn’t eaten in days!  I keep a variety of snacks in the house, including fresh fruit, raw cut-up veggies, and carb snacks like low fat granola bars and graham crackers.  Tribe Hummus contacted me about reviewing their products, and the email included this scary article about the dangers of food additives that are in many packaged snack foods. Tribe Hummus contains no saturated fats, trans fats, hydrogenated oils or cholesterol, it’s made with natural ingredients, and it’s offered in 17 different flavors.

Tribe sent me four tubs of their hummus to sample, the flavors we received are Classic, Roasted Garlic, Roasted Red Pepper, and 40 Spices. I bought a couple of bags of baked pita chips at Target, brought them home, opened everything up, and stood back. First came Nathan and his friend Forrest, who immediately started shoveling chips and hummus into their mouths. I’m not even sure they knew which flavor they were eating! I gave Kaitlyn a scoop of the Classic because I wasn’t sure how spicy the other flavors were, then fixed myself a snack of pita chips and the Roasted Red Pepper.

YUMMMMMMMMMMMM. Seriously, SO good.  If you’re wondering what hummus IS, exactly, it’s made with chickpeas (also known as garbanzo beans), blended with tahini which is a paste made from sesame seeds, oil (Tribe uses canola), lemon juice, salt, and usually roasted garlic. Tribe Hummus has organic flavors available, and all are certified Kosher, 100% Vegan, with no trans fats or cholesterol. I recommend starting with the Classic or the Roasted Red Pepper flavors as those are the mildest in terms of spice.  Although I have to admit that my kids aren’t as excited about a snack of hummus and pita chips as they would be about a snack of, say, Doritos, I think I”m winning them over. And I feel good that Kaitlyn and I have such a healthy snack in the house for our morning snack.

Visit the Tribe Hummus website to learn more about the company and to find recipes.  Find where to buy Tribe Hummus on their locator page.  If you and your kids (if you have them) like hummus, let me know in the comments! Have you had the Tribe brand? What did you think?

My kids like hummus and Tribe is a good brand. I stay away from the heavy garlicy flavored hummus (I like it but my kids don’t). My favorite website for healthy snack ideas is http://www.snack-girl.com/

I LOVE Tribe Humus! It reminds me of my family, because my mom always keeps a tub of Tribe in the fridge. She likes the Roasted Red Pepper best, but I tend to favor the Original. It’s great with pitas, carrot sticks, chips, or in a tasty veggie wrap with some lettuce, tomato, muenster, avocado… yum :) Plus, it has a little protein and it is totally vegan. Glad you all like it!!
