The Oceanology Handbook (Review)

The Oceanology Handbook: A Course For Underwater Explorers (Ologies) is the companion book to OCEANOLOGY: The True Account of the Voyage of the Nautilus, written by Zoticus de Lesseps. The Handbook is meant as a study guide written by de Lessep’s tutor, Professor Arronax. The story goes that in 1863, bits of wreckage washed up on a beach in Spain, including a watertight container holding a French text penned by Professor Pierre Arronax. Arronax explored the seas along with Captain Nemo in the submarine Nautilus and kept this detailed journal meant to explain some of the wonders of the ocean. He’s now sharing what he has learned with young Zoticus de Lesseps in this vivid and richly detailed marine journal.

In this book, kids will learn the difference between a steamer and a schooner, how to navigate a ship during a storm, how underwater volcanoes are formed, what creatures live in the dark depths of the oceans, and much more. The pages feature incredible black and white as well as color illustrations, four pages of stickers featuring sea creatures, ships, treasure, and diving equipment, reader activities such as learning to spell your name in Morse Code, and a pull-out letter at the end.

This hardcover book is not too big, so it’s easy to tuck into a backpack for reading time at school, or to take along anywhere. Amazon.com has it listed at only $10.39 which is a great deal for a hardcover book. Recommended for ages 9-12. Learn more about all the books in the “Ology” series at OlogyWorld.com.

These really are a nice book series. My son has another one in the series. They are nice books with great illustrations and just the right amount of information to hold kid’s attention without going into too much detail and boring them.
