Stodgy And Proud Of It

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Stodgy Is Sexy for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.

One of the meanings for the word “stodgy” is “not in accord with or not following current fashion”. It also means boring and dull. I don’t know if I would call myself boring and dull, but in the last few years, I’ve definitely tried harder to be more frugal and thrifty.

One change I’ve made, especially since my third child was born in 2005, is to purchase the majority of the kids’ clothing at thrift stores. I bought all of my oldest son’s clothes new. It never even occurred to me to buy secondhand. When Nathan was born, it helped that I saved all of Ryan’s baby clothes and Nathan was able to wear them, but when he needed something I didn’t have, I bought it new.

When Kaitlyn was born though, I changed my opinion. I didn’t have a stash of girl’s baby clothes, I had to buy absolutely everything, so one day I drove over to the Volunteers of America store near our house. I couldn’t believe the racks and racks of baby clothes, many that looked brand new, for a fraction of the cost. From then on, I made it my goal to buy as many pieces of clothing for all three kids from thrift stores as I could.  My kids are always well-dressed and I save money at the same time – darn right that’s sexy!

Stodgy is Sexy is a project that aims to look at the movement in our culture towards common sense, practicality, and simplicity.  The website includes a series of short documentaries profiling a group of individuals who embody the idea that  Stodgy is Sexy. They include a young couple who run a successful blog about renovating their house themselves, a surgeon, an artist who designs book covers, and the former CEO of an international marketing firm.

I tried my hand at making my own documentary portrait, please excuse the excessive blinking and stammering. Making videos is a skill I have not yet mastered :)  Here’s what I had to say on the top of stodgy is sexy:

KitchenHub Family Organizer

TudorSpan Software introduces the KitchenHub Family Organizer, an easy to use Family Organizer, calendar, and planner that brings all your family’s emails, calendars and tasks together into one easy to read and easy to use place. Each member of your family has their own screen with their calendar, to do list and email, plus everyone has access to notes, recipes, shopping lists, the address book, and more.  It costs only $39.95 (you can also pay in British Pounds or Euros) for a single computer license. I downloaded the free 30 day trial which gives me full access to all the features.  This is the sample home screen:

Set up is easy and takes just a few minutes.  You enter the first names of your family members, your city and state for the weather info, and you have your home screen. The Settings link lets you enter the email address for each person, as well as synching calendars and address books.  I was running Google Chrome when I downloaded the trial, and found it had no problem connecting to my Gmail, Google Calendars, and my Gmail Address book.  The Internet icon gives you a choice of Google, Windows Live, Yahoo!, or Facebook, clicking any of them brings up the homepage for that site. Since I’m always signed in to Facebook anyway, I like having it right there.

After adding some items to the Family Calendar, I realized that the only drawback to this is that it is only a single computer-program. It would be great if my son could see the calendar from his laptop and my husband could see it from work. I hope TuderSpan releases a version that allows for multiple computers at once. Otherwise, I see a lot of potential in this software. It’s well laid out, it’s easy to find things, easy to add and delete and edit, and it combines a ton of information into one.  Download the free trial and see for yourself!
