I have to admit, I don’t know that much about Stetson except that it’s a well known American brand that’s been around a long time. It turns out that the invention of Stetson hats is actually a pretty cool story! John B. Stetson was 24 in 1859, and was panning for gold in Colorado when he found himself needing a way to stay warm and dry so as not to make his tuberculosis worse.
He observed that beaver pelts repelled water, and since Stetson came from a family of hat makers and knew how to make felt, he used beaver pelts to first make a tent and then design a hat. He made the hat tall because his father had taught him that a cushion of air between the crown of the hat and the top of his head would keep his head warm, and made the brim wide to keep out the elements. Finally, he made the lining waterproof so the hat could double as a water bucket if needed. Pretty clever!

In fact, my husband has a pretty big bald spot on the back of his head and he has to keep it covered in the summer or it sunburns badly. He’s been wearing a hat we bought from a stand on the beach in California about 9 years ago, I think it’s time he got a new hat, don’t you? He likes straw because it “breathes” and doesn’t make his head sweaty, so I”m thinking the hat called the Stetson Seagrass Gambler would be perfect for him! Those are cool hats! I have the Aussie version, called an Akubra. It is also waterproof, just like the Stetson.
