The Wild Thornberrys Season 1 on DVD Review and Giveaway

From Shout! Factory comes The Wild Thornberrys: Season One on DVD, and boy does it bring back memories! The show premiered on Nickelodeon in September 1998 and ran for five seasons, and then was shown in reruns on Nickelodeon, The N, Nicktoons Network, and on CBS. It was one of my boys’ favorite cartoons and I’m pretty sure we saw every episode!

The series follows the Thornberry family as they travel the world in their Communication Vehicle or CommVee. Mr. and Mrs. Thornberry (voices of Tim Curry and Jodi Carlisle) make wildlife documentaries, accompanied by their daughters, 16 year old Debbie (Danielle Harris) and 12 year old Eliza (Lacey Chabert). There are two other very unique characters that are part of the Thornberry “Family” – Darwin (voiced by Tom Kane with the monkey noises of Blake Farmer) who is a chimpanzee who travels with the family and is a loyal companion to Eliza, and Donnie (voiced by Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers), a feral boy who was raised by orangutans after his real parents, a pair of naturalists, were killed by poachers.

But that’s not all! What really makes this show fun is that Eliza has a very special gift – she can talk to animals, an ability she gained after an encounter with an African shaman. In most of the episodes, Eliza has to figure out a way to use her gift without anyone else knowing – like in the first episode when a pride of lions is hunting Debbie and Eliza has to talk them out of it. Paramount Home Entertainment, Nickelodeon and Shout! Factory have joined together in a sub-licensing agreement that will give Shout! Factory rights to distribute DVD and Blu-ray releases of some of Nick’s classic animated programs, including The Wild Thornberrys, Hey Arnold, Danny Phantom, Aaaah! Real Monsters, and Rocko’s Modern Life in the United States and Canada. I’m so glad I got The Wild Thornberrys so I can share this fun show with Kaitlyn, years after her brothers watched it!

      I’m not familiar with any classic Nickelodeon shows. We didn’t have that channel until the 1990′s, and those shows during that time aren’t old enough to be deemed “classic”.
