Lifetime Movie “At Risk” on DVD

In 2006, author Patricia Cornwell took a break from her award-winning novels featuring medical examiner Dr. Kay Scarpetta to write “At Risk”, a 200 page novella about Win Garano of the Massachusetts State Police, and D.A. Monique “Money” Lamont. The book was turned into a Lifetime movie executive-produced by Cornwell and starring Andie MacDowell (“Groundhog Day) as Lamont and Daniel Sunjata (“Rescue Me”) as Garano.

Boston D.A. Lamont is running for Governor and to drum up voter support, she announces she is creating a new forensic lab to solve crimes. For her first case, she chooses a cold case, a twenty year old unsolved murder from Knoxville, Tennessee.  (It’s never explained how she thinks solving another State’s case will impress Massachusetts voters).  Garano is tapped to investigate, aided by Detective Sykes, a Knoxville cop played by Annabeth Gish (“Pretty Little Liars”), and Ashley Williams (“How I Met Your Mother”), whose character has the unfortunate name of Stump. Just…Stump. Diahann Carroll (“Grey’s Anatomy”) plays Garano’s Nana, and Cornwell herself has a brief appearance as a waitress.

When Lamont’s life is threatened and more importantly, he gets a phone call warning him that his Nana will be hurt if he goes to Tennessee, Garano stays in Boston and begins piecing together what connects the Tennessee murder and the attack on Lamont.  Someone from Lamont and Garano’s past is revealed to be not who she thought he was, and one member of the team meets a tragic end.

I wish Cornwell had written more than 200 pages of this story and fleshed it out more,  but Daniel Sunjata and Annabeth Gish save the inconsistent plot with good acting that keeps the story moving forward.  Fans of Lifetime movies can pick up At Risk on DVD from Amazon.com for $6.99.

Glee: The Complete Second Season Now on Blu-ray and DVD

I have watched every episode of “GLEE” since episode one of season one, but I still love collecting the episodes to watch again, especially because I’m a sucker for bonus features. I love seeing what really happens behind the scenes! Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment released “GLEE”: The Complete Second Season on Blu-ray and DVD last week, and they are both packed with all 22 episodes and never-before-seen bonus features sure to please both the casual viewer and hardcore GLEEKS like me!

Season Two had some episodes that were not-so-hot (“Grilled Cheesus” was pretty awful) but also some episodes that were jaw-dropping. Episode four, “Duets”, has Mercedes and Santana singing “River Deep, Mountain High”, and it is one of the best musical duets I’ve ever heard, period. I have the CD of season two and I listen to that song a lot. Episode five is the Rocky Horror Musical episode, and episode eleven is “The Sue Sylvester Shuffle”, which aired immediately after Super Bowl XLV. Reportedly the most expensive post-Super Bowl episode ever produced, “The Sue Sylvester Shuffle” cost $3–5 million. It featured over 500 extras, guest star Katie Couric, and the amazing “Thriller/Heads Will Roll” performance.

“GLEE” THE COMPLETE SECOND SEASON Blu-ray & DVD Features:
• Glee Music Jukebox
• Guesting on Glee
• Stevie Nick Goes Glee
• A Day in The Life of Brittany
• Shooting Glee in New York City
• Sue’s Quips
• Santana Slams
• Building Glee’s Auditorium with Cory Monteith
• The Making of the Rocky Horror Glee Show
• Exclusive Bonus Song – “Planet, Schmanet, Janet”
• Getting Waxed with Jane Lynch
• The Wit of Brittany
• Glee at Comic-Con 2010

Suggested retail prices are $44.99 for the Blu-ray and $39.98 for the DVD. Look for specially-marked packages with a sticker that reads “glee give a note”, and $1.00 of your purchase price will be donated to save arts and music programs in public schools.

disclosure: Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment sent me “GLEE”: The Complete Second Season to facilitate this review. No other compensation was received and all opinions are my own.

Ryan plays the violin and Nathan plays the clarinet, and we’ve taken Kaitlyn to several Orchestra and Band concerts, so she was already somewhat familiar with musical instruments. But with Zin! Zin! Zin! A Violin, she’s learning not just the names of instruments, but words that describe the sounds they make, and how instruments can combine into duets, trios, quartets, and more.  This story does such an amazing job of introducing children to all of that.

In an orchestral hall, two cats and a mouse sit on an empty stage. Then, a single trombone enters, “With mournful moan and silken tone”. He’s followed by a trumpet who in turn is followed by a French horn, a cello, a violin, a flute, a clarinet, an oboe, a bassoon, and (finally) a harp. With everyone in place, and the conductor stationed before them, everyone plays together in perfect harmony. Words like moan, tone, oiled, and coiled describe the shapes and sounds,  and there’s even counting included in the text, like ”Two, now three-o, what a trio!”  All of the stories in this collection are fantastic, but I have a soft spot for the title story :)

Scholastic Storybook Treasures – The Young Artists Collection is priced at $24.95. Visit http://www.newkideo.com to purchase this and other Scholastic Storybook Treasures collections.
