Häagen Dazs New Five Ingredient Ice Cream

Thanks to MomCentral, we had the opportunity to review four of the new flavors of  “five”, a new line of Ice Cream by Häagen Dazs.  Each of the seven flavors include only five ingredients (Milk, Cream, Sugar, Eggs), plus a unique fifth ingredient- Ginger, Passion Fruit, Coffee, Mint, Milk Chocolate, Vanilla Bean and Brown Sugar.

Now, I’ll be honest. If I could have picked four flavors to review, I would have picked Coffee, Mint, Milk Chocolate, and Vanilla Bean.  But MomCentral and Häagen Dazs shook things up here at MomReviews by sending us Mint, Passion Fruit, Ginger, and Brown Sugar.  The Mint was devoured immediately. The other three flavors took a little more encouragement on my part.

The Mint was a lovely pale green shade and the purest mint flavor I’ve ever had. I would have loved to have sprinkled it with dark chocolate chips but it didn’t last long enough :)   Half a cup has 220 calories, 12 grams of fat of which 7 grams are saturated, 23 grams of sugar and 5 grams of protein.

After the Mint, my favorite flavor was the Brown Sugar, which tasted, to me, like the ice cream part of Butter Pecan ice cream, if that makes sense.  If you like eating a bowl of oatmeal topped with brown sugar and milk, then you need to try a scoop of “five” Brown Sugar ice cream between two oatmeal cookies. TRUST ME.  Half a cup has 230 calories, 12 grams of fat (7 saturated), 23 grams of carbs and 5 grams protein.

The Ginger ice cream was surprisingly good.  You know what it tasted like to me? When I was a kid growing up in a suburb of Detroit, we used to get Vernor’s Ginger Ale flavored Ice cream in the summer. And every nearby ice cream parlor had Vernor’s Floats, which was scoops of vanilla ice cream in a glass full of Vernor’s Ginger Ale.  THAT’S what “five” Ginger Ice Cream tastes like to me. Half a cup has 230 calories, 12 grams of fat (7 saturated), 22 grams of carbs and 5 grams of protein.

Which brings us to Passion Fruit. In a word, ick.  It’s not that I don’t like fruit flavored ice cream- Strawberry and Black Cherry are Kaitlyn’s favorites, so I’ve had those. But Passion Fruit is a very strong tasting fruit, and it was just weird in ice cream. Just my opinion. Half a cup has 220 calories, 11 grams of fat of which 6 are saturated, 24 grams of carbs, and 4 grams of protein.

The site says “surprisingly lower in fat”, so I looked at the list of regular flavors.  Regular Häagen-Dazs® coffee ice cream also only has five ingredients, but half a cup has 270 calories and 18 grams of fat. So you do save a considerable amount of fat by choosing one of the “five” flavors.  Look for “five” in your grocer’s freezer.

Listerine Total Care Review

Brushing, flossing, rinsing-anything we can do to keep our mouths healthy and avoid expensive dental bills is a good thing, right? Listerine Total Care Anticavity Fluoride Mouthwash provides 6 benefits in one product, for a cleaner and healthier mouth.

* Helping to prevent cavities
* Restoring enamel
* Strengthening teeth
* Killing bad breath germs
* Freshening breath
* Fighting unsightly plaque above the gum line

listerine2I was sent a 500 ml bottle of Listerine Total Care and asked to blog about it by Johnson & Johnson’s and MomCentral. At first I wasn’t sure what flavor it was going to be since it’s purple, but it’s actually mint. I’m guessing it’s purple to set it apart from the regular Mint Listerine.

I’ve used regular Listerine as a mouthwash, and there’s a definite difference to the Listerine Total Care. It left my mouth feeling like I had scrubbed my teeth right along the gumline. Whatever the ingredient is that fights plaque at the gumline, it definitely works!

Listerine Total Care Anticavity Fluoride Mouthwash is intended for adults and children twelve and older; keep it away from younger children. The 500 ml bottle sells for around $4.00, other sizes are also available. Get more information at the Listerine website.
