What are palladium rings?

palladium_ring

Palladium rings are fairly new to the wedding bands market. In fact in the past five years they have really picked up some popularity. They are a great alternative to platinum. In fact the price of a palladium ring versus the price of a platinum ring is about 65 percent less. This makes having a quality white metal ring much more affordable for a lot of people. Palladium rings are very similar in weight to 14 karat white gold rings. The benefit of palladium over white gold is that palladium is naturally white and will not fade back to yellow over time.

There aren’t too many other white alternatives. There is a new one called cobalt chrome. Cobalt chrome rings are very similar to palladium in color. The problem with cobalt chrome is they can’t be resized more than one full size. This makes any weight change difficult to deal with because your fingers usually change when your weight changes. So you may go up or down in size and have a hard time with a non precious metal band. So a palladium ring is a great choice for his or her wedding band.

Lovely Layers Bow from Spoiled Much (Review)

Spoiled Much bow

After having two boys, I have to admit I enjoy having a girl with long hair I can style and accessorize. Most days I use a small ponytail holder to pull back the top half of Kaitlyn’s hair, or sometimes I do a whole ponytail. I’ve tried barrettes, but they just slide right out. I had never been able to put the bows that are attached to clips in her hair. Then I got an email from Crystal at Spoiled Much about reviewing a bow from her site, and I learned that there ARE bows that will stay in Kaitlyn’s hair!

Crystal sent Kaitlyn a Lovely Layers bow attached to a french barrette, and it is GORGEOUS. It’s got three narrow ribbons in light pink, brown, and darker pink, three wider ribbons in those same colors, a ribbon with flowers and stripes, and a clear crystal gem securely glued to the front. Most importantly, it’s secured to what’s called a french barrette, which has a sort of spring inside that squeeze the hair between the clip and holds it in tight. Kaitlyn never stops moving, and that bow does not slide out!

Every time she wears it, at least one person stops me to ask where I found such a beautiful bow!

Kaitlyn Hair Bow

When you order from Spoiled Much, you are purchasing a hair accessory that is handmade and one of a kind. Bows come in two sizes, you can choose an alligator clip, a french barrette, or a headband, you choose the colors, and the prices are really reasonable.  For example, a 3.5 inch Lovely Layers bow on an alligator clip or french barrette is $6.75, and a 4.5 inch bow is $9.75, plus shipping. I’ve seen large bows like these at Craft shows for as much as $15.00!

I took some close up pictures of the back of the bow  so you could see the french barrette -

It’s obvious that Crystal and Kimberly put a lot of love and care into everything they make.  Visit spoiledmuch.com to see all the handmade items they sell, like Spoiled Much on Facebook, and check out the Spoiled Much blog, too.

Jizo and Chibi Jewelry Review

jizo_gold_necklace_little_watercolor

Jizo and Chibi Jewelry is the creation of Valerie Johns, but the story of Jizo goes back thousands of years. 2500 years ago, Jizo was one of the four principal bodhisattvas – enlightened teachers – in Mahayana Buddhism. Upon his enlightenment, when he could have transcended this life forever, he pledged to remain on earth until every soul was finished suffering. Revered as the protector of children, he can connect us to our inner child. Jizo also protects travelers.

While living in Tokyo as a teenager, Johns had two friends who were very tiny, and were called the “Chibi-ko Gang”, meaning gang of little ones.

As an adult in Japan, Johns began noticing small stone figures, sometimes scattered in groups alongside a road, sometimes one by itself in a backyard. Her host told her that the figures were Jizo. She explained that “Jizo protects all people, but mostly we think of him as the protector of children: healthy, sick, unborn, never born.”

When I was emailed about doing a review of Jizo and Chibi, I was immediately drawn to the story. I like the idea of wearing a piece of jewelry with a charm, a talisman of sorts, especially when I travel since Jizo protects travelers. I asked to review the gold Jizo charm. I like to imagine that under his coat he his holding a Chibi, a little one, close to his heart, protecting both me as I travel and watching over my kids at home.

Jizo Gold Necklace

At jizoandchibi.com, Johns carries both figures in earrings and necklaces, in sterling silver and 81K gold vermeil. She also has pendants with gemstones, and bracelets. Each piece is handmade in Los Angeles. You can also purchase Johns’ books “Why a Fly?” in which Jizo helps Chibi with unanswerable questions, and “what I heard & what you said”, a book about communication. The site also has Johns’ artwork, and a short meditation practice focused on the breath.

I’m really looking forward to wearing my Jizo pendant and explaining to people who ask who he is and what he stands for. I think I’ll feel a lot better about my trip to New York wearing Jizo around my neck! Please check out jizoandchibi.com and see if there’s a piece that speaks to you.
