UP on Blu-Ray and DVD

UpBlurayBoxart smPixar’s UP is quite simply a delight. It’s charming, funny, sweet, suspenseful, touching-and because it’s Pixar, it’s got lovable characters. The movie begins with Carl (voice of Ed Asner) as a young boy, worshipping a famous explorer along with his kooky friend Ellie (Ellie Docter, daughter of writer/director Pete Docter). Carl and Ellie dream of one day traveling to Paradise Falls, Venezuela, as they build their dream home and work at the local zoo, Carl as a balloon vendor. In a short but bittersweet silent montage, we see Carl and Ellie’s deep love for each other, especially when they are unable to have children. In the end, Carl outlives Ellie and ends up alone and grumpy.

One day, while defending the mailbox that he and Ellie marked with their handprints, Carl accidentally hurts a construction worker and is told by the court that he needs to go to a nursing home. Instead, Carl releases hundreds of balloons through his chimney, lifting the house up and away. Much to his surprise, he hears a knock on the door and finds Wilderness Explorer Scout Russell, who is trying to earn his Assisting the Elderly badge. After a series of close calls, Carl and Russell land near Paradise Falls, where they discover a talking dog, a colorful bird, and someone potentially dangerous.

I don’t want to give away any more spoilers, except to say that you’ll be surprised how suspenseful it gets, even while you’re hearing hilarious one-liners and looking at eye-popping visuals. And, it has a very happy ending that I promise will put a smile on your face!

I reviewed the UP 4 Disc Combo Pack with Blu-Ray, Digital Copy and DVD, and it is INCREDIBLE. I can hardly believe you can get all that for only $19.99 on Amazon! Both Blu-Ray discs are PACKED with bonus features, and this is a movie your kids (and you too!) will watch again and again.

disclosure: I received UP from Disney for this review, all opinions are my own. No other compensation was received. The links in this post are Amazon Associate links, I earn a commission from any sales made.

Slumdog Millionaire on DVD and Blu-Ray

slumdogSlumdog Millionaire is almost like two movies in one. Running parallel to each other are the story of Jamal (played as an adult by Dev Patel), the young man competing in India’s version of “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire”, and having reached the final question, being interrogated by the police as to exactly how he could possibly know the answers to the questions. After all, he’s a “slum dog”, having grown up in the poorest neighborhoods, orphaned as a child and having raised himself and his brother from an early age.

As he explains to the interrogator how he came to know the answer to each question, a flashback shows the young Jamal and his brother Salim surviving on their own, including living literally in a trash dump where they befriend a charming little girl named Latika (played as an adult by Frieda Pinto) and spending time in a gang.

Throughout his life, Jamal hangs on to his memories of Latika, finding her and losing her twice. When they are finally reunited, you may find yourself standing up and cheering right in your living room. This movie has brutal torture scenes and harsh treatment of children, so be careful about showing it to younger kids. I watched it with my 12 year old and at the end he said “Mom, that was an AMAZING movie.”

Pick it up on DVD and Blu-Ray in stores and on Amazon.com.

Space Buddies Games and Photos

The adorable movie Space Buddies, which has become my 3 year old daughter’s favorite movie, is out on DVD and Blu-Ray today. I’ve got some info you can use to save money on your purchase and have some Space Buddies fun!

  • Visit SPACEBUDDIESMOVIE.COM and click each of the dogs floating at the top to hear them say a line from the movie. There’s music playing so watch the volume on your speakers.  There’s a cute “Build a SpacePad” flash game that lets you design a room for any or all of the dogs, it’s slow to load but fun to play with. You can also print a coupon for $3.00 off your DVD or Blu-Ray purchase.
  • I’ve got a Space Buddies game sheet and a coloring page in a file on my desktop, but I don’t know how to link to them here so you can just click and print them out. If you want me to email them to you, let me know in a comment. (Or feel free to school me on how to upload images that readers can click on lol)
  • Space Buddies writer/director Robert Vince was joined by co-writer Anna McRoberts, actors Diedrich Bader and Bill Fagerbakke, voice talent Josh Flitter (Budderball), Field Cate (Buddah), and many more for a special screening for the Young Presidents’ Organization (YPO) celebrating the DVD & Blu-ray release of SPACE BUDDIES. Here’s some photos from the event:
