Cheerios New Author Contest Info And Giveaway

This giveaway is closed. Congratulations to the winner, comment #18 from Teresa @tmy56!
Since 2002 when they created the Cheerios Spoonfuls of Stories® program, Cheerios has given away over 40 million books packaged in cereal boxes, and donated more than $3.2 million to First Book, an award winning children’s literacy non-profit that provides children from low-income families the opportunity to own their first new books. By putting children’s books inside specially marked boxes, Cheerios is providing more of the simple, basic ingredients that help nourish your whole child: 100% natural whole grain oats, just 1 gram of sugar and a great story.

My Dad eats a bowl of Cheerios almost every morning, and over the years he has collected quite a pile of the little storybooks out of the boxes.  First Ryan read them, then Nathan, and now Kaitlyn is sounding out the words in books like “No Dogs Allowed!” by Sonia Manzano, “Sylvester and the Magic Pebble” by William Steig, and “Click Clack Moo” by Doreen Cronin. By partnering with publisher Simon & Schuster, Cheerios is putting some of the best books written for children today into the hands of kids and their parents.

We’ve been enjoying “How Do You Hug A Porcupine” by Laurie Isop, who was the 2009 winner of the Cheerios New Author Contest. In this cute rhyming book written in both English and Spanish, a little girl has fun hugging all kinds of animals while a little boy wonders how the heck to hug a porcupine – the answer is found on the last page! Laurie, a small business owner, mother of two boys, and aspiring author since the age of 12, can now add “published author” to her resume. In addition to her book being featured in more than three million specially-marked boxes of Cheerios, it will also be available in bookstores nationwide beginning this July.

Those who want to follow in Laurie’s footsteps and think they have the “write” stuff can visit www.spoonfulsofstoriescontest.com from March 22 through July 15, 2011 to find out how to enter the 2011 Cheerios® New Author Contest. Kellogg’s Apple Jacks and Froot Loops with Fiber

KidsCereals_185x185When I was a kid, my Mom rarely bought sweetened cereal. Because she was a diabetic, she couldn’t eat it, so she bought plain cereal like Corn Flakes and Rice Krispies. We were allowed to sprinkle a teaspoon of sugar on top, that was it.  Imagine how I felt when I went off to college, and on my first morning there, walked into the cafeteria and saw a table filled with boxes of sweetened cereal!  I spent the next couple of weeks trying different kinds, until I narrowed it down to a few favorites. One of those favorites, that I still love and buy regularly, is Kellogg’s Apple Jacks. LOVE THEM.

As a Mom, I want my kids to have a breakfast that will fill them up and give them energy to get through their morning before they have lunch.  Since they prefer to eat cereal for breakfast, I do try to find cereals with at least 2 or 3 grams of fiber per serving so they will digest it slower and feel full longer. It can be hard though, to find high fiber cereals that also appeal to kids’ tastes.

So, when I got the email from MomCentral about an opportunity to review new Apple Jacks and Kellogg’s Froot Loops with Fiber, I replied back right away! I was so happy when the package arrived, with TWO boxes of the new Apple Jacks with Fiber, a box of original Froot Loops, and  box of the new Froot Loops with Fiber. My kids were also very excited about helping me with this review :)

Both cereals now have 3 grams of fiber per serving, which moves them up from “treat” cereal to “okay to buy” in my book!  The best part is, the taste has not changed one bit!  Being very familiar with the taste of original Apple Jacks, I found no difference at all in either the taste or texture of Apple Jacks with Fiber.  I’m less familiar with the taste of Froot Loops, but I poured bowls of both and tasted each, and again, couldn’t taste any difference.  Way to go, Kellogg’s!

For more information on what fiber is, how it benefits the body, and how many grams a day to eat, check out Kellogg’s Nutrition. Look for Froot Loops and Apple Jacks with Fiber in stores now!

disclosure: This post is part of a blog tour for MomCentral and Kellogg’s. I received four boxes of cereal from Kellogg’s, and I will receive a gift certificate from MomCentral to thank me for taking the time to review the products.  All opinions are my own, no other compensation was received.

My three kids go through a LOT of cereal. Besides breakfast, they sometimes have it for an after-school snack, and Kaitlyn sometimes wants a bowl of cereal before bed. I try to stick to cereals made with whole grain, but that doesn’t have to mean a boring bowl of sticks and twigs! General Mills knows that kids love fun, fruity cereal and that parents want nutrition, so their popular kids’ cereals are now made with whole grain which makes me AND my kids happy! One of those cereals is Trix, the one with the “silly rabbit” who just can’t resist the fruity flavors of raspberry red, lemony lemon, orangey orange, wildberry blue, grapity purple and watermelon. As if original Trix wasn’t yummy enough, now there’s Trix Swirls, with pieces that have two flavors swirled together!

Thanks to MyBlogSpark, we got a box of Trix Swirls to review, and between my husband and my three kids, that box lasted less than a day. We also received an amazing art set so we could experiment with swirling colors together just like in the Trix pieces! Ryan’s the artist in our family, and Kaitlyn asked him to paint her something, so he painted her a big cupcake with a cherry on top, and she loved it so much, she asked to have it taped to the wall in her room. I have two Trix Swirls prize baskets to give away, and each will include:

    • A box of Trix Swirls (this might be a coupon for a free box instead)
    • A colorful apron
    • a set of watercolor pencils
    • watercolor paints
    • brushes
    • a sketchbook
    • an art supply box

If you have kids who love to paint and create with color, this is the giveaway for you to enter!
