A young boy climbs a tree and at first, feels great about being up there and looking all around. Then he realizes, he still has to get down. What will he do? I’m Up in a Tree written and illustrated by Mark Alden Johnson, is a terrific rhyming story that deals with a common childhood worry – will my parent be upset at me for making a bad choice?
The boy in the story (he doesn’t have a name) seeks the advice of a bee, a bird, and a cat, but finds that their methods for getting out of a tree (Jump! Fly! Climb down!) aren’t going to work for him. Plus, he’s worried about getting hurt, ripping his clothes, and worst of all, having his Dad be mad at him. Or ground him “until he’s a hundred and two”. What will happen?
Johnson’s illustrations are simple, colorful, and I like that each page features just a few elements that take up the whole page. I also like the font the book uses, it’s big and easy to read. I think I’m Up in a Tree is a good choice for both reading to a child and for an early reader to read by themselves. Pick it up at Amazon.com for $11.66, a savings of $3.00 off the cover price.
