I’m Up in a Tree by Mark Alden Johnson

A young boy climbs a tree and at first, feels great about being up there and looking all around. Then he realizes, he still has to get down. What will he do? I’m Up in a Tree written and illustrated by Mark Alden Johnson, is a terrific rhyming story that deals with a common childhood worry – will my parent be upset at me for making a bad choice?

The boy in the story (he doesn’t have a name) seeks the advice of a bee, a bird, and a cat, but finds that their methods for getting out of a tree (Jump! Fly! Climb down!) aren’t going to work for him. Plus, he’s worried about getting hurt, ripping his clothes, and worst of all, having his Dad be mad at him. Or ground him “until he’s a hundred and two”. What will happen?

Johnson’s illustrations are simple, colorful, and I like that each page features just a few elements that take up the whole page. I also like the font the book uses, it’s big and easy to read. I think I’m Up in a Tree is a good choice for both reading to a child and for an early reader to read by themselves. Pick it up at Amazon.com for $11.66, a savings of $3.00 off the cover price.

Books for Kids- Little Skink’s Tail

Skink_187In Little Skink’s Tail written by Janet Halfmann and illustrated by Laurie Allen Klein, a little skink is attacked by a crow and in order to get away, snaps off her tail!  Little Skink is happy she got away, but she misses her bright blue tail, so she daydreams of having a tail like the other animals in the forest. None of the tails seem right though, one is too fluffy, another too stinky!  Then, Little Skink gets a surprise…and doesn’t have to daydream anymore.

This book has terrific illustrations and teaches a wonderful lesson about the importance of being happy with who you are.  At 32 pages, it’s recommended for ages 4-8 and is published by Sylvan Dell publishing.  Little Skink’s Tail was chosen as one of the three Best Children’s Books of 2009 by the Mom’s Choice Awards, as well as receiving Gold awards in the Educators’ Choice and Animal Kingdom categories. The book also won the 2009 Teacher’s Choice Award from Learning Magazine and was named Best Picture Book and Best Overall Book for 2008 by the Florida Publishers Association.  Suggested retail price: hardcover- $15.95, paperback $8.95.

Terrific Picture Books for Kids

EarlyLight Books introduces four eye-popping children’s picture books, with titles that are sure to get your child’s attention! Just try telling a kid over the age of 3 that you want to read a book called “Bug Butts” to them and see if you don’t both start giggling :)

EarlyLight Books

EarlyLight Books sent us all four titles at no charge in return for a review, and Kaitlyn was a willing tester!  We read a lot of children’s books and these are amazing. The colors in the illustrations and photos just pop off the page. We had no idea that bugs used their butts in so many different ways, from defending themselves to communicating with other bugs.    We were fascinated by the different ways animals use their tongues and take baths, and the Green colors of Animal Colors are stunning.  Any of these books would make a wonderful addition to a child’s picture book library.

Visit EarlyLightBooks to download the Fall ’09 PDF catalog, and for ordering information. Each book is $14.95.  Thank you EarlyLightBooks for sending us the four books at no charge for this review!
