Super Why, and Martha Speaks

From PBS Kids comes two new DVDs that get kids reading, spelling, and rhyming, just in time for back to school! Super Why and his super friends go to new and exciting places in the new-to-DVD release Attack of the Eraser.  Join the super friends as they practice spelling, use the power to read and investigate rhyming words in order to change the outcome of the story and save the day!  Martha Speaks: Martha goes to School helps kids with vocabulary as well as lessons about helping your friends and self-image. Both DVDs can be inserted into a computer to access dowloadable coloring pages and educational games.

Super WHY!: Attack of the Eraser

This DVD includes four great new adventures from the Super WHY! gang!

  • Attack of the Eraser- Whyatt and his friends are playing kickball in the park when Wolfy erases the score! The super readers fly into a new kind of reading material- a comic book called Attack of the Eraser - to track down the diabolical Eraser who’s causing trouble in Reader Valley
  • The Story of the Tooth Fairy- Whyatt has lost his very first
  • The Cookbook-W hyatt wants to bake Baby Joy a special cake-but he doesn’t know how! Super Why and his friends soar into a new kind of book –  a cookbook – and get the information they need from a rhyming chef with a silly sense of humor as well as a recipe for fun!
  • The Big Game- Whyatt wants to play baseball better, but he keeps missing the ball. The superhero readers jump into The Big Game and join some fairytale heroes gearing up for their big soccer match against their storybook foes.

Martha Speaks: Martha Goes to School

This DVD includes 8 episodes to help kids increase their vocabulary!

  • T.D. and the Light Bulb of Doom- T.D. panics after he leaves his school project until the last minute.
  • Skits Monkeys Around-Skits loves Malcolm (TV’s blue monkey)so much he wants to be Malcolm.
  • Ain’t Nothin’ but a Pound Dog, Part 1- Martha Loses her collar and winds up in the animal shelter.

  • Truman’s Secret- Where has Truman been hiding and why is he acting so weird?

Sesame Street: 40 Years of Sunny Days

In honor of the 40th birthday of Sesame Street, Children’s Television Workshop has released an incredible DVD collection called “Sesame Street: 40 Years of Sunny Days”. Featuring favorite moments from the show, this amazing collection will take parents on a trip down memory lane and introduce children to the Sesame Street their parents loved as kids. This Two-Disc set has over 5 hours of iconic moments, favorite songs, celebrity segments and exclusive never-before-seen backstage footage.

I was born in 1967, so Sesame Street was the first TV show I remember watching. I still get excited when I see the Pinball Number Counting Sketch (1 2 3 4 5, 6 7 8 9 10, 11 12!) or hear the Purple Two-Headed Monster discovering the telephone. Other great skits in this collection include the Rubber Duckie song, Ladybug Picnic, appearances by celebrities like Fonzie from Happy Days and Diana Ross, as well as newer skits like Law & Order: Special Letters Unit and the introduction of Elmo and Abby Cadabby.

I’d like to caution parents that the episode that dealt with the death of Mr. Hooper is included in this collection. If you haven’t talked about death with your children first, it might be upsetting or confusing to them. Just so you know.

Whether you grew up watching Sesame Street or not, this DVD is a wonderful educational addition to any DVD collection. The list price is $29.93, it’s $19.99 on Amazon. I think you’ll like it as much as your kids do!

My Review:
I hope this DVD is just the first of a new franchise for LEGO! Watching this DVD refreshed our love of LEGOS and all the cool things you can build with them. My boys grumbled when I said “hey, come watch this DVD with me!”, but they both watched it all the way through and at the end, admitted it was “pretty cool”, which is high praise coming from 11 and 13 year old boys :) It didn’t hold my 4 year old daughter’s attention for very long, but I bet if LEGO came out with a Princess movie, she would definitely watch it!

For fans of LEGO, The Adventures of Clutch Powers is an entertaining, family-friendly DVD. Don’t be surprised if your kids ask to get some new LEGOS after you watch it!
