The movie “Eagle Eye” came out on DVD and Blu-Ray today, and if you didn’t see it in the theater, I recommend picking it up or renting it. It stars Shia LaBeouf (“Transformers”), Michelle Monaghan (“Made of Honor”, “Gone Baby Gone” ), Billy Bob Thornton (“The Astronaut Farmer”), and Rosario Dawson (“Seven Pounds”), and while the plot might seem completely implausible, it’s so fun to watch that you forget that what’s happening would, well, never really happen. Or at least you hope it wouldn’t.
LaBeouf plays Jerry Shaw, a clerk in a copy shop who learns of the death of his identical twin, an officer in the Air Force. Shortly thereafter, he goes to the ATM and discovers over $700,000 in his account. Back at his dump of an apartment, he opens the door to find boxes of weapons and explosives. His cell phone rings and a female voice tells him he needs to escape, but it’s too late and the police show up to arrest him.
Meanwhile, across town, single Mom Rachel (Monaghan) gets a call from the same voice telling her to follow instructions or her son, who is on a train to Washington D.C. with his Youth Orchestra, will be killed. Yikes. Jerry and Rachel end up together in the same car, following instructions from the voice on the phone as well as on computerized signs.
Billy Bob Thornton is an FBI agent and Rosario Dawson is an assistant to someone in, I think the Navy? They are assigned to chase the two down. The voice instructs Jerry and Rachel to do completely bizarre things like rob two security guards and go to Macy’s for VISA cards with which to buy new clothes. Thornton catches up to them in the luggage conveyor area of an airport, and there’s a fun chase scene that goes up and down the conveyor belts.
I gotta hand it to Shia LaBeouf, he is turning into quite the action star. Like, if there’s another Bourne movie and Matt Damon isn’t available, I think Shia could totally do the part. I was really surprised at how well he handled all the action scenes, as well as the quieter moments with Rachel. And while the whole premise of the movie is kind of far-fetched (is technology taking over, etc.), it’s rated PG-13 so it’s a great movie to watch with your family. I recommend the 2 Disc Special Edition because it has awesome bonus features:
Deleted Scenes; Road Trip Making Of Documentary; Alternate Ending; Asymmetrical Warfare: The Making of Eagle Eye Documentary; Eagle Eye on Location: Washington, D.C; Is My Cell Phone Spying on Me?; Shall We Play a Game?: Conversation Between Directors D.J. Caruso And John Badham; Gag Reel; Photo Gallery; Behind The scenes; Theatrical Trailer; Previews.
