My Daughter Definitely Has Her Own Clothing Style

My daughter is five and a half, and she definitely has her own clothing style. She loves anything pink, anything purple, and anything with Hello Kitty on it!   Because she loves to mix and match, I buy separates that coordinate rather than specific outfits that have to match.  I buy her patterned tops and solid bottoms, and since she pretty much only wants pink and purple, everything usually matches pretty well.

If we’re just hanging around the house, I don’t care if her tops and bottoms match. She can put on a pink flowered shirt and purple shorts and that’s fine. But if we’re planning to go somewhere, I usually suggest she try a different outfit and she usually agrees. If she insists on wearing what she has on though, I don’t fight her, because who really cares if a little girl is wearing slightly mismatched clothes?

With Kindergarten starting soon (gulp),  I’m thinking ahead to buying school clothes. I’ve been browsing the racks at Penney’s, Walmart, and Target, getting an idea of what’s in style this season. Fortunately for me and Kaitlyn, it looks like separates are easy to find, and there’s plenty of pink and purple.  In fact, JCPenney has a line called “Okie Dokie Mix and Match” which is tops, leggings and something they call “scooters’ which I think are what I call “skorts” – and the best part is if you buy three pieces, they are only $7.00 each!

So, I’m thinking that for about $60 or so, I can buy Kaitlyn six tops and three bottoms that will mix and match, and that will get her through Fall! Score!  And the pieces are super cute, too.

The other reason I buy Kaitlyn separates rather than outfits is because she’s a bigger size on the top than on the bottom! She needs a size 6 in tops, but is barely a size 5 on the bottom. I can’t buy her clothes online for that reason either, because I have to try everything on her first because just because a tag says 5 doesn’t mean it will fit like a 5.

So I’ll take Kaitlyn clothes shopping and I’ll let her show me what she likes. We’ll look for pink and purple and Hello Kitty, and pieces that mix and match.  I think it will be a whole lot of fun!

Garanimals Summer Collection Now Available

This is my 4.5 year old daughter Kaitlyn wearing her new outfit from Garanimals. She was so busy whirling and twirling around the house yelling “I got pretty clothes!” that I could barely get her to stand still long enough to snap this photo!  She LOVES how easy the top and skort are to get on, the soft fabric, and the bright yellow color. I can barely get her to wear anything else!  Here’s some info from the PR person about Garanimals:

Garanimals Summer collection is just as fun as the season itself! With bright printed or solid skorts and striped or solid tops for girls, and sporty tees and cargo shorts for boys, newborns and toddlers will be ready to play it cool all season long.   Available exclusively at Walmart, Garanimals clothing is known for being durable, affordable and easy to coordinate. And the best part is, Garanimals has some of the best prices – only $3.50 per piece (varying slightly in different markets) – offering the most attractive and affordable clothing in kids fashion!

Garanimals were introduced in 1972, the year I was 5, and I clearly remember my Mom picking me up a few separates. The new summer collection for 2010 features terrific colors and designs that kids are going to want to wear! For girls, look for sunny yellow, bright pink, juicy orange, and white. An orange top with white hearts and a big hot pink peace sign coordinates with orange and white striped pants or with a pink skirt. In toddler boys, look for lime green, light blue, navy blue, and yellow, with monsters, rocket ships and submarines. And those are just a few examples of the adorable pieces available! Each collection has the same animal on it’s tag, so you can be sure the pieces will go together.

Garanimals clothing is available in six size groups: Newborn Boys, Newborn Girls, Boys Infant & Toddler, Girls Infant & Toddler, Boys 4-8 and Girls 4-8. Look for the new summer collection from Garanimals at a Walmart store near you or from the Garanimals Brand Shop on Walmart.com.  And thank you to Garanimals for sending Kaitlyn this outfit; you can be sure we’ll be purchasing more of the clothes from the summer collection!

An Imaginary Talbots Shopping Spree!

My Mom was a loyal Talbots shopper.  When I think of Talbots, I think of really conservative teacher clothes for that reason. But it turns out that Talbots carries high fashion pieces, which I learned from reading their red chair confessions blog. On the blog you find photos snapped on the streets of New York of chic young women wearing at least one piece of Talbots clothing. I was WAY off base assuming that Talbots clothing was only for, well, Moms. Through SocialSpark, Talbots challenged me to pretend I had $500.00 to spend and show them what I would buy. And then I started going through their site and realized that I could easily spend a WHOLE LOT MORE than $500.00!  If I had $500.00 to spend at Talbots, here’s what I would buy:

This Scoopneck Print Tee in Raven-Moody Paisley, $56.00 (for the Woman’s Petite size)

Scoopneck Tee

These Cotton Bi-Stretch Pants in black, $89.50

Cotton Pants

These Driving Moccasins in black, $99.00

Driving Mocassins

This GORGEOUS Quilted Shoulder Bag in Raven (it matches the shirt!), $89.00

Shoulder Bag

And this Quilted Barn Jacket, also in Raven (can you tell I love that color?!), $180.00

Quilted Barn Jacket

Grand total, $513.50, so I would owe Talbots $13.50. I would gladly pay that if I could get everything else!  What attracts me to the pieces I chose are the classic “preppy” styles. What I did learn from my Mom is that trends come and go, but some things are always in style, and it’s worth it to spend a little more for clothes you can wear for more than one season. Now that I’ve seen the clothes that Talbot sells, and that they aren’t boring (far from it!), I just might start buying a piece or two when I have a little extra in my clothing budget. And I think I’ll put that shoulder bag on my Christmas list :)
