Snacktrition keeps busy bloggers going

Filed Under (Fabulous Finds, Food) by User ImageElizabeth (Who am I?) on 23-07-2008

Tagged Under : calcium, fiber, Food, Health, nutrition, nuts, snacks, snacktrition

Not only do busy bloggers need nutritious, filling snacks, but so do their kids, and Snacktrition has come up with a line of delicious roasted nuts that provide the nutrients you need in a delicious snack!
Snacktrition Nuts
aren’t oil-roasted but rather are “Health Baked” in a proprietary process by which they sprinkle the nuts with calcium, fiber, or both, oven roast them, then sprinkle them with kosher sea salt. The results? DELICIOUS!!

Snacktrition nuts come in 9 ounce containers or handy 3 ounce packs; I received the five 9 ounce containers you see in the above photo for this review. I put them on the table and my husband and sons started circling like vultures. My husband claimed the Fiber Sea Salt Cashews, Ryan grabbed the Calcium Smoked Almonds, and I stashed the Calcium and Fiber Fruit and Nut mix for my trip to BlogHer (airplane snacks!).

I did, however, insist that everyone give me a taste of their chosen variety, so that I could give my opinion, which is, YUMMY. I took the Fruit and Nut mix in my carry-on bag, and when everyone else was paying $5.00 for a “snack box”, I was munching on almonds, cashews, dried cherries, and yogurt chips! Delicious, and filling.

The recommended daily amount of fiber is 20-30 grams, and a shocking 95% of Americans don’t get that much. A one ounce serving (23 nuts) of the Calcium Sea Salt almonds has 3 grams of fiber, along with 15% Daily Value of calcium per serving (Based on a 2,000 calorie diet), 135 mg of calcium, 6 mg of vitamin E, 80 mg of magnesium, and 5 grams of protein. Visit the Snacktrition website to get all the nutritional info and to order some Snacktrition nuts for yourself. You can buy the 3 ounce Bags ($2.99 each) or 9 ounce Tubs ($6.99 each and the Fruit and Nut tub is 8.5 ounces)-I recommend the tub if you want to ensure that you’ll get some for yourself!

While you’re on the website, scroll down the home page and enter to win a Total Gym or one of 50 $25 gift cards to Foot Locker. I’m naming Snacktrition Nuts a MomReviews Fabulous Find!

Win Burn Jel, must-have item for burn treatment

Filed Under (Contests) by User ImageElizabeth (Who am I?) on 07-05-2008

Tagged Under : Contests, giveaways, Health, house and home

Did you know that every 25 seconds, someone in the United States is burned or scalded in their home? Scalds from hot liquids are the leading cause of accidental death in the home for children from birth to age 4 and account for 60 percent of the burn injuries for children up to age 14. The most likely place for children under 4 to be burned is right in their own kitchen.

When a burn occurs, it’s crucial to act quickly. Most of us are probably like me and immediately want to put the burn under cold water. But that just cools the surface, and as the heat from the burn rises, it counteracts the cooling effect of the water, which is just evaporating anyway. Burn Jel is water-based, but acts as a heat exchanger. It also contains Lidocaine for immediate pain relief, and Tea Tree Oil which is naturally antibacterial.

I’ve got ten cartons of Burn Jel to give away, it’s recommended that you keep the bottle right in your kitchen. To be entered to win a carton, please leave a comment on this post. The contest will end on Wednesday, May 21st at 9:00 am EST, when I will draw ten winners at random from all valid comments. I will contact winners directly for their shipping info, then forward it to the sponsor for direct shipping. Please make sure to leave a valid email address with your comment. If you aren’t chosen as a winner, pick up Burn Jel at drugstores like CVS, Walgreens, Rite Aid, and at Wal-Mart.
Good luck!

Do an herbal body wrap at home

Filed Under (Health) by User ImageElizabeth (Who am I?) on 25-04-2008

Tagged Under : beauty, Health

Spas charge a LOT of money for herbal wraps, which use seaweed and other herbs slathered on your skin and covered with bandages to help tighten and firm sagging skin and cellulite. It’s much less expensive to purchase body wraps in kits you can use at home, which generally contain a seaweed mixture to which you add warm water. You apply the mixture, wrap the body part with the bandages, and relax for a half an hour or so, then unwrap and rinse off in the shower. Seaweed wraps can pull toxins from the body and help with the breaking down of body fat. Save money on body wraps by purchasing home kits rather than spending lots of money at the spa.

Silence the sounds of Pertussis

Filed Under (Health) by User ImageElizabeth (Who am I?) on 10-03-2008

Tagged Under : Health

PKIDs, or Parents of Kids with Infectious Diseases, has teamed up with actress Keri Russell to spread awareness of the very potentially dangerous illness called pertussis. You may know it better by the name ‘whooping cough’. This potentially deadly bacterial infection can strike at any age, but is particularly dangerous for babies. The sounds of pertussis are like no other, marked by a “whoop” made when gasping for breath after a severe coughing attack. You can go to the PKIDs website page for pertussis, and listen to an audio file of what a child with pertussis sounds like. If you’ve ever had a child come down with whooping cough, it’s a sound you never forget.

More than 50 percent of babies with reported cases of pertussis must be hospitalized. The coughing can be so severe as to inhibit eating, drinking, even breathing. Other dangerous symptoms include:

* Babies may bleed behind the eyes and in the brain from coughing.
* The most common complication is bacterial pneumonia. About 1 child in 10 with pertussis also gets pneumonia, and about 1 in every 50 will have convulsions.
* Brain damage occurs in 1 out of every 250 children who get pertussis.
* Pertussis causes about 10-20 deaths each year in the United States.

What’s really scary is that parents are responsible for more than half the cases of pertussis in babies. It’s a bacteria that lives in the mouth and throat, and when an infected adult talks, sneezes or coughs, droplets of the bacteria can be transmitted. The best way to guard against pertussis is to get a vaccination. The DTaP vaccine stands for Diptheria, Tetanus, and Pertussis. Adults aged 19 and over should have a single booster shot . Children ages 11 to 18 can also benefit from the booster.

For more information, please visit the PKIDs website. This has not been a paid or sponsored post, I just feel it’s important to spread this information to parents of young children. Thanks for reading.
