Petz Nursery 2 for Nintendo DS

Petz Nursery 2 is the latest in the series of Nintendo DS games by Ubisoft that let players care for virtual baby animals. It’s one of Kaitlyn’s favorite DS games because of the cute baby animals she gets to take care of.   There are 22 baby “petz” to unlock in this game. Along with puppies and kittens, you’ll eventually unlock polar bears, wolf cubs, ducklings, piglets, baby pandas, tiger cubs, even four different breeds of penguins!

One difference between this game and the original Petz Nursery is the ability to take care of two animals at the same time. It’s so cute to watch them meet each other,  play together and they even try to eat each other’s food! Every time that happens Kaitlyn cracks up!

Petz Nursery 2 has players care for their petz, which means feeding them, playing with them, giving them a shower, teaching them to crawl, and putting them to sleep. Kaitlyn’s favorite activities are giving the petz their shower, blowing up balloons by blowing into the DS microphone,  and playing a game where you shake a rattle to get the petz attention. The longer you keep them happy, the more they grow!

I recommend Petz Nursery 2 for ages five and up.It’s rated “E” for everyone. Suggested retail price is $29.99 but it’s only $18.99 from Amazon.com. Petz Fantasy: Sunshine Magic for Nintendo DS

Petz Fantasy: Sunshine Magic is one of two games for the Nintendo DS that follow the huge success of Ubisoft’s original Petz line of games. In Petz Fantasy, players enter a dream world and discover eggs that hatch into cute fantasy creatures like unicorns and dragons. There are 20 Petz to discover and collect in this game, and 20 more in the companion game Petz Fantasy: Moonlight Magic.

Thanks to Collective Bias, we received Petz Fantasy: Sunshine Magic to review, and it was a fun game for Kaitlyn and I to play together. After each pet hatches, it has to be fed, played with, dressed, and trained. Kaitlyn’s favorite part is the 20 different costumes and the tons of accessories!

Petz also have to be trained by playing mini-games. Fantasy Petz can have four types of powers: Flight, Ice, Fire or Speed. Players guide their Petz through tunnels, through gold rings in the air, earning points that unlock more items as they go. This part requires a good sense of hand/eye coordination and was the hardest for Kaitlyn at age five.

We haven’t gotten to this part of the game yet, but apparently in Petz Fantasy: Sunshine Magic players can teach their fantasy Petz to morph into household objects like toaster ovens or lamps, to keep them “secret” from parents!  I can just imagine Kaitlyn handing me her DS and saying “Mom, can you find my pet on the screen?” and me just seeing a lamp or whatever. Clever!  Suggested retail price: $29.99 Rated “E” for everyone.

Holiday Gift Guide-Fancy Nancy Tea Party Time DS

Fancy Nancy: Tea Party Time! for Nintendo DS takes players right into the world that the book series has made so popular. Nancy is a little girl who believes everything in life deserves to be made “fancy”, from her clothes to her hair to her poodle Frenchy. In fact if she can use a French word for something, that makes her even happier! Little girls will love helping Nancy in this adorable game from THQ.

In this game, players explore Nancy’s neighborhood on a mission to help Mrs. DeVine plan the perfect party. Nancy needs to find all of the supplies needed for the party while solving easy challenges. Because Nancy loves to try on different outfits, the game cleverly has challenges that call for changing Nancy’s clothes, sometimes minute to minute! For example, Nancy’s raincoat, boots and umbrella are required for wading through puddles, and her fairy wings outfit helps her jump across long distances. The game is intuitive and was easy for my almost-5 year old daughter to play with minimal help.

Kaitlyn’s favorite parts of the game are searching for the colorful “Fancies” that are traded for virtual stickers, and a game where Nancy has to pull vegetables out of the garden before the rabbits eat them. This game has been holding her interest for weeks and she never seems to tire of doing the same challenges over and over. She’s even started saying a few French words she learned in the game!

Amazon.com has Fancy Nancy: Tea Party Time! for Nintendo DS for $29.96 plus free Super Saver Shipping. If you know a little girl who has a Nintendo DS, this would make a terrific holiday gift!
