Giveaway – WordWorld: The Train Escapade on DVD

We are big fans of WordWorld on PBS Kids. I think it’s one of the cleverest kid’s shows on TV for the way it teaches kids to recognize letters, put them together into words, and then spell those words. While also teaching familiar concepts like being a good friend and working together! The stars of WordWorld are Duck, Dog, Pig, Frog, Sheep, Bear, and Ant. Each has a distinct personality, and like everything else in WordWorld, are each made up of the letters of their name. It’s fun to see how creative the show gets, molding the letters that spell a noun into it’s shape.

We also enjoy watching the DVDs, so we were thrilled to get the new Word World: The Train Escapade DVD from NCircle Entertainment. Kaitlyn and I enjoyed all four of the episodes! It runs 60 minutes plus there are some bonus sneak peeks at other shows at the end. The episodes are:

  • You Can Never Have Too Many “OO”s–When the “OO”s in Monkey’s roof blow away, it is up to Duck to hunt them down and fix the roof before it rains. Duck rides with Kangaroo in her train to chase the /oo/ sound through WordWorld.
  • Duck Hiccups–When Duck drinks down a glass of water too quickly, he gets the hiccups for the first time ever! His WordFriends try every trick in the book to help him, but which cure will work?
  • Achoo!–Pig is allergic to peaches! When Sheep brings Pig a big bag of peaches to make pies, Pig starts sneezing so much that he can’t even tell Sheep what he really needs is a… a… apples.
  • Get Well Soon Soup– When Ant gets sick, Pig tries to take care of him by making his special Get-Well-Soon Soup. It has all the letters in the alphabet in it, so Pig can build any that Ant needs to feel better.

Kaitlyn’s favorite episode was “Achoo!”, because she says it was so funny how Pig kept sneezing. I could tell she liked it from the constant stream of giggles while she was watching! I’m sure this DVD will go into regular rotation now :)

    WordGirl on PBS Kids Go!

This Monday, September 7th, check your local listings for a brand new episode of WordGirl, starring ten year old Becky Botsford, the schoolgirl with an awesome vocabulary and a secret superhero identity for defeating villains!

In “Becky and the Bard“, Becky (voice of Dannah Feinglass) and Violet (Maria Bamford from “American Dad”) compete for the coveted role of Juliet opposite Hunter Throbheart (voice of James Adomian, who is best known as a President G.W. Bush impersonator, performing on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, and in the movie “Harold and Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay”.) Violet is cast as Juliet with Becky as her understudy, and when Violet is captured by the Energy Monster, it seems like Becky will get her big break at last. But will she choose the role of a lifetime, or choose to save her friend?  vocabulary words for this episode: shimmer, memorize

In “Monkey Vs. Robot”, the city is hosting the big Checker Championship, and Tobey (voice of Patton Oswalt) has the perfect champ- the giant Robot Checkmate 3000, who will face off against Becky’s monkey pal Bob. When Tobey pressures his robot to win, Checkmate goes on a rampage against anything shaped like a checkerboard, and WordGirl and Bob must team up to stop him. vocabulary words: champion, vanquish

Created by Dorothea Gillim and Jack Ferraiolo-who won an Emmy for his work as the series’ head writer-WordGirl seeks to not underestimate children’s intelligence by giving them a show that’s both smart and funny. PBS Kids sent me a screener of these two episodes to review, and now it’s a show I’ll look for to watch with my 10.5 year old!

Sid the Science Kid Mother’s Day Special

    sid-the-science-kid

Following up on the excellent Earth Day episode, PBS Kids presents a special Mother’s Day episode of Sid the Science Kid. In “Special Mom Day Meal”, Sid declares that it’s a special Mom Day, so he makes his Mom French toast for breakfast. When Sid smells the French toast and his stomach growls, he wonders if his stomach is trying to talk to him.

When Sid and his friends investigate at school, they discover that the stomach makes noise when it’s getting ready for digestion. them to do lots of cool stuff like swing from trees, fly in the air, or even scratch their ears with their feet!

The Sid the Science Kid website has great activities for kids including printable Mother’s Day cards, a game that goes along with this week’s theme for the show (The Body) called  “Muscle Memory,” where kids learn all about muscles while helping Sid and his Dad move their bodies.

Other online Sid activities launching May 4th include a free ringtone for mom of the show’s popular “I Love My Mom” song available for a short time at http://www.pbs.org/parents/special/mothersday.html and the launch of the Sid the Science Kid Soundtrack Volume 1, available at www.amazon.com.
