Holiday Gift Guide- Boom Blox Bash Party for Wii

BoomBloxBashI know that the original Boom Blox game was a big hit for Nintendo when the Wii first came out, but I had never played it. Now that I’ve played the follow-up game, Boom Blox Bash Party, I can see why it was so popular!  This game is TOTALLY ADDICTIVE!  It seems like such a simple concept, use the WiiMote to “throw” a ball at stacked blocks and try to knock them all down in the fewest number of throws, but it’s not that easy!  In this game, there are more than FOUR HUNDRED single and multiplayer levels, and you have to use all your powers of deduction to figure out how to successfully clear each level.

And, the towers of blocks aren’t just ordinary blocks, either. There are Virus Blox that cause a chain reaction and “infect” all the blocks in their path, Chemical Blox that explode when they touch each other, and purple Vanish Blox that just disappear when hit, causing the blocks on top to fall down.  With the ability to move the camera angle almost all the way around, you just figure out a strategy and let the WiiMote fly, hoping you are aiming at the right spot!

Boom Blox Bash Party is an affordable option as far as Wii games go, at only $27.99 on Amazon. It’s a great holiday gift idea!

Review:

I gave the game to my 10 year old son to play. He was enthusiastic about it at first, but got frustrated with the game very quickly.  Either he skipped over the tutorials at the beginning or there weren’t enough of them, because he couldn’t figure out what to do and where to go. There’s a companion Strategy guide available separately, but we didn’t get that and couldn’t find any online walkthroughs either.  He finally gave up because he couldn’t progress through the game.  My guess is that this game is for older players and especially ones who played the original Xbox 360 game and know basically what to do. More information about the game is available through this widget.

Friday night Pizza and Halo Night

For this weekend’s Parent Blogger’s Network Blog Blast, we’re supposed to talk about our family holiday game traditions, what games we play when we get together for Thanksgiving or Christmas. But my extended family doesn’t play games when we get together. We eat and talk, we clear the dishes, then we set back down with plates of pie and cups of coffee and talk some more. And that’s exactly what we like about getting together!

Instead, my family’s game tradition is Friday night Pizza and Halo Night. For the last three years, almost every Friday night, we order pizza, and then while I poke around online, Chris and the boys play Halo. They meet up with their friends on Xbox Live and form parties, take on other teams, talk trash into the headsets. It’s a weekly tradition that we all look forward to. In fact, any suggestion to have pizza any night besides Friday is always met with incredulous looks and protests that we would be disrupting the flow of space and time if we ate pizza on, say, a Tuesday.
