Ways to Stay in Touch with Family Abroad

Sarah Lifestyle

When you have a family member who is overseas, it can be difficult not seeing them and speaking to them on a regular basis. Email and social media can help you to stay in touch, but this is not particularly personal and you never really connect with anybody through these methods. There are a few excellent ways to stay in touch and feel close to those abroad, however, so consider any of these methods if you find yourself missing a loved one.

Skype

Skype is a fantastic tool for any long distance relationship. It allows you to see and hear the individual (or group), so you can have a proper conversation and see their face. It also allows you to see where the other person is in the world and they can show you around through the use of the camera on their device. Time difference may make this challenging depending on the location, but you should be able to find a suitable time to catch up.

Handwritten letter

It is worth having some kind of digital conversation, such as email or Facebook, where you can keep each other updated and send attachments, but it is also a great idea to send a handwritten letter from time to time (for birthdays/Christmas etc.) A handwritten letter in today’s day and age is rare and shows that a lot of thought and effort has been put into the message. This is sure to put a smile on the recipient’s face. These letters and other packages can be delivered by courier services like TNT Express within a short period of time.

Care package

If you want to make their week, consider sending a care package to them. This will be a parcel that contains their favourite things and reminds them of home. A care package could contain their favourite food (be sure to check that this is allowed), photos to show them what you have been up to recently, clothing, CD’s, toys and plenty more. Reputable couriers, like TNT, can safely send packages to places all around the world for affordable prices.

Online activities

Although you will want to know what they have been up to regularly, you will also want to have some fun with them and relax like you would do if they were at home. Playing an online game or a similar activity is one way to do this, or you could even plan to watch a film/TV show “together” over Skype.

Through these methods, you will feel close and connected to any family member living abroad.
