Harumika Puppies and Purses Review and Giveaway – 2 Winners!

Harumika is the award-winning toy from Bandai that lets girls use their imagination to create their own fashions with fabrics and accessories. What I like best about Harumika products is that there’s no glueing, sewing or scissors involved. The unique “Style Lock” system and the included stylus tools make it easy to wrap, drape, and tuck the fabrics and accessories around the Harumika mannequins – which now include puppies and purses!

Awarded the coveted Good Housekeeping“2010 Best Toy Award,” Harumika continues its leadership position in the fashion design activity category by expanding its product line, offering girls more fun ways to “style their imagination” and create their own fashions with colorful fabrics and chic accessories. From puppies to purses, wedding dresses to fashion showstoppers, Harumika is making waves for aspiring fashionistas everywhere.

Kaitlyn was sent the Harumika Zebra Flare Purse Collection and the Harumika Punk Pug Puppy Collection to review.   The purse set comes with a purse, stylus tool, custom display stand, and two special-cut fabrics. The purse has a removable gem on the front that helps hold the fabric in place and finishes the look. Here’s Chris helping Kaitlyn wrap and tuck the fabric:

Chris Helping Kaitlyn

Younger girls might need help learning how to center the purse on the fabric before starting to tuck it in, once Kaitlyn got the hang of it though, she got all the fabric tucked in and the gem centered on her finished purse. Here she is proudly showing it off!  Retail price – $7.99.

Harumika Purse

The Harumika Puppy set comes with one of four cute puppies, three special-cut fabrics, a bow and leash, a bed that can also be styled, and a bone-shaped stylus tool. Unfortunately I can’t show you my own photo since Kaitlyn misplaced the dog shortly after we got it and we can’t find it anywhere. The four puppy collections are Classy Chic Chihuahua, Trendy Terrier, Pretty Poodle, and Punk Pug. This shows what came in the Punk Pug Collection that Kaitlyn reviewed:

See the two holes on the fabrics? You slip the puppy’s front legs through those holes and then tuck the extra fabric into the style lock underneath – genius! Kaitlyn loved getting the puppy in a new “outfit” and then putting it in the bed – at least until she misplaced it :) Retail price – $7.99.

Kanani – 2011 American Girl Doll of the Year

As an American Girl Parent Partner, I am thrilled to bring you this review of a very special doll! 2011 is the 25th birthday of American Girl, and to celebrate, they’ve released ten year old Kanani Akina™, who  lives in a small seaside town on the island of Kauai in Hawaii. The doll is 18 inches with long, wavy medium-brown hair and hazel eyes and comes dressed in a light blue sundress, blue sandals, a pink flower clip in her hair, and a purple bead necklace.  Kanani will only be available THIS YEAR, so if you’re an American Girl doll collector or just think this would be the perfect doll for someone special, don’t wait, order her soon!

Kanani also comes with her first book, Aloha Kanani. Kanani loves sharing the wonders of her island home with visitors. So when her cousin Rachel from New York comes to stay for a month, Kanani is excited to get to know her. But no matter what she does to help Rachel feel at home, it only seems to make her unhappy instead. Can Kanani find a way to connect with her cousin? Written by Lisa Yee, this paperback has 120 pages and is for ages 8 and up. Another book called Good Job, Kanani has also been released.

Accessories for Kanani include a beach outfit, a paddleboard set, a shave ice stand, a lounge chair set, and a plush monk seal.  With the purchase of every Kanani plush monk seal sold in 2011, American Girl is donating $1 (up to a maximum of $100,000) to National Wildlife Federation’s efforts to help children throughout the United States gain an appreciation and understanding for America’s most vulnerable animals through various educational programs and activities.

To further engage girls in Kanani’s world and her story’s inspirational message, American Girl has special products and activities just for fans of Kanani. Some of them include:

  • Lend a Hand: Girl-Sized Ways of Helping Others: A nonfiction companion advice book to the Kanani fiction series, Lend a Hand gives girls ideas and tips (both big and small) for making a difference at home, among their friends, in their community, and on the planet.
  • Kanani Retail Events: Starting on January 1, girls can take part in Kanani-inspired events at American Girl retail stores nationwide, including demonstrations for dancing hula, free Hawaiian craft activities, and delicious Kanani-themed meals.
  • Kanani and Me E-cards: From January 1 through April 15, 2011, girls can create and share their own Kanani-themed postcards at americangirl.com/girloftheyear and can be automatically entered (with parent’s permission) in a drawing to win a Kanani doll and book.

Kaitlyn and I love the Kanani doll that American Girl so generously sent us for review! Her hair is really soft and fun to brush, and Kaitlyn can’t wait for it to warm up so we can take her to the beach!  Remember, the Kanani doll, books, and accessories will be available ONLY for this year or while supplies last through American Girl’s catalogue, at americangirl.com, and at all American Girl retail locations. To request a free American Girl catalogue, call 1-800-845-0005.

Diecast Semi Trucks – Providing Focus to Your Hobby

Mike Chapman - public domain

Collecting diecast semi trucks is a hobby that many people enjoy. Whether a person is interested in casual collecting or if they are a die-hard collector, this hobby has something for everyone. However, no matter the type of die cast hobbyist someone may be, an individual needs to have focus so they can build a collection that is the most personally appealing and rewarding to them.

To begin with, if you have made the decision to concentrate your collection on diecast semi trucks, then you will want to only collect this style of vehicle and avoid other non-tractor trailer diecasts. Knowing the kind of truck you are interested in helps you to focus your research and purchasing, allowing you to become an expert on these particular models, so you will know exactly what you are looking for and what you should expect when making your selections, deciding on brands, or buying from an auction.

Next, you’ll want to figure out what scale of diecast semi trucks you want to obtain. You may find that you prefer to collect one size of truck or you might be interested in owning models of all different sizes. The main scales for die-cast vehicles are 1:18, 1:24, 1:34, and 1:64, with 1:64 being the smallest scale of all the listed sizes. Essentially, you will likely base your decision on how you want to display your collection, the space you require to show off your pieces, and your personal preference.
