When pregnant, many women experience a boost in the amount of hair they have on their heads. However, once your baby is born, it’s not long before the change in your hormones has all this hair ready for fall right back out again. 

While this can be disheartening, it’s rarely anything to really be alarmed about. The real problem comes when your hair is now full of tiny baby hairs that stick up all over your head. But luckily, there are plenty of things you can do to minimize this or hide it until your hair has settled back into its normal state.

Be Careful With Hair Tools and Treatments

Although it can do wonders for you to take some time for yourself and get a little dolled up after having a baby, for the sake of your hair, you’re going to want to be careful when using hair tools or treatments. While there are some that are meant to help your hair grow, others will simply cause more damage.

Because of this, Heidi Murkoff of What To Expect recommends that you try to steer clear of things like your blow dryer, flat iron, or curling iron for a few months after your baby is born. Additionally, try not to get any major chemical treatments done, as this could just exacerbate your hair loss. Once your shedding stops, you should feel free to resume your normal hair care routine. 

Get A Trim

With parts of your hair at all different lengths now due to hair loss, it can be helpful to give yourself somewhat of a fresh start in this department.

To help with this, the American Academy of Dermatology suggests getting a trim so that all of your hair is closer to the same length. Not only will a bob or lob help make your hair look more full and less scraggly, but it can also be a convenient style for new moms with grabby babies. 

Care For Your Body And Your Hair

Just because you’re no longer pregnant doesn’t mean that you should stop taking care of your body in the best way you can. As a part of this, Dr. Karen Gill, a contributor to Healthline.com, advises that you continue to eat well and take your prenatal vitamins after having your baby to help keep your body and your hair as healthy as possible.
